Ilhan Omar not denying being related to her ex-husband is an ‘Oh s***’ moment: Guy Benson

Washington Examiner columnist Guy Benson criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) over “very suspicious” accusations that she is related to one of her ex-husbands and carries a different birth name.

“This is someone who has these rumors that have swirled around her for a while,” Benson said on Fox News’s Gutfeld! on Friday.

Allegations that Omar married her brother to help him obtain immigration benefits resurfaced after Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin suggested last month that there was evidence against her.

MS Now host Chris Hayes questioned Omar about the claim during an interview on Wednesday, which she dismissed as a conspiracy theory.


When asked if she was related to her ex-husband, Omar replied, “Not to my knowledge.”

Benson addressed Omar’s supporters, saying he could understand Democrats calling it a conspiracy until she gave that answer.

“I would be willing to say, ‘This is all made up, this is right-wing BS, etcetera — until that interview,” he said.

Benson said her response was “a very lawyerly, politician answer,” and it is “probably pretty damning” that she couldn’t give a yes or no answer.

“I would have said, ‘Oh s***, this is real. That is the moment that I would have panicked,” he added.

Controversy surrounding her real last name intensified after President Donald Trump said it was “fake” during a campaign rally in Florida. Trump said she used the name “Ilhan Omar” to be elected to Congress, but claimed she has a different name.

Sources told Fox News Digital that Omar’s birth name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, which is the same last name as her ex-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.

Trump wrote on Truth Social about the investigation, calling for her immediate resignation.

“It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar, the one she used to get elected and sworn into Congress, but rather, it’s an entirely different name, Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, and that her last name is, incredibly, also the exact name of her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the person they said she married and had children with,” Trump said.

“Therefore, because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume she must IMMEDIATELY resign from Congress,” he continued.

“It’s strange to not even be sure what to call her,” Benson said, adding that it all seems “very suspicious.”

“I’m sort of waiting for more of these details to come out,” Benson said.
