Homan Defends ICE Agents After Democrats Complain About New De-Escalation Device

Although the mainstream media has largely avoided the angle, plenty of footage has surfaced on social media that shows undocumented immigrants and anti-ICE activists threatening or attacking agents tasked with enforcing the nation’s laws.

In response to the ongoing threat, the agency has obtained a new non-lethal device for agents to use in certain situations to ensure compliance.

Of course, leftist critics were quick to object. But as The Hill reported, border czar Tom Homan was among the White House sources setting the record straight:

The product only works on contact with the skin and does not work through clothing. Among the instructions included in the manual are prohibitions on using the gloves as a response to “verbal defiance” and as a form of punishment or torture.

Border czar Tom Homan described the gloves as something of an intermediary step.

“Look, it’s another device to help someone be compliant, whether or not — you know, you just can’t go from zero to 100, right?” he said during an appearance on Fox News on Thursday.

He offered no timeline for when the gloves might be dispersed and also said he thought they would be better used in a detention setting where officers have more knowledge about the people they are interacting with than among the general public.

“There’s a lot of training involved. There’s still some background issues that need to be dealt with. So the implementation of these gloves out in the field are going to be a while. I think they serve a better purpose in detention facility, where detainees get out of control and there’s fights in the facility,” Homan said.

“So we’ll see. Still, the training protocol is being written and being reviewed. Then we’ll see when they get rolled out.”

The issue sparked some social media discussion, too:

Fox 8 added these details:

The Department of Homeland Security published a notice on Monday, Aug. 10, outlining plans to spend up to $20 million on the devices for ICE agents’ use during immigration enforcement operations. They’re known as “Generated Low Output Voltage Emitters,” or G.L.O.V.E.s.

The gloves, manufactured by Compliant Technologies, can deliver an electrical charge of up to 380 volts when they come into contact with exposed skin. Unlike a traditional Taser, the device is not designed to incapacitate someone and cannot deliver a shock through clothing.

The tool has been used previously in correctional facilities and police departments. They do not deliver the same voltage as a normal Taser, Oklahoma News 4 reported in a story about a local jail’s use of the gloves.
