Rep. Ilhan Omar’s former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi—the man critics have long alleged is also her brother—has now described himself publicly as a gay man.
The statement appears in Elmi’s own academic work, not in a tabloid quote, an anonymous post or somebody else’s characterization of him.
And yes, that adds another almost impossibly bizarre turn to a marriage controversy that was already difficult to explain with a straight face.
TMZ brought the newly surfaced paper to a wider audience Friday morning:
The key fact is verified by the academic record.
The University of Bristol lists Elmi as the author of “Out in the Field: Notes on Researching Queer Violence in Kenya.” The peer-reviewed essay was published August 27 in volume 11 of The Open Review for the Social Sciences.
Elmi wrote that his research into violence against LGBTQ people in Kenya was shaped by his identity “as a gay man of the East African diaspora.” The paper discusses nine months of fieldwork and how his own background influenced his access, safety and relationship with the people he interviewed.
That sentence is Elmi speaking for himself. It is not speculation about his private life.
The paper-focused report circulating Friday shows the precise passage at the center of the story:
Elmi’s sexual orientation does not prove that he is Omar’s brother. It also does not, by itself, prove their marriage was fraudulent.
Those are separate claims, and the distinction matters.
What the paper does is add another unusual fact to a legal marriage that has faced scrutiny for years.
Omar and Elmi married in 2009. He left Minnesota in 2012, and their divorce was finalized in 2017.
Critics have alleged that Elmi was Omar’s brother and that the marriage was arranged to help him obtain immigration status. The sibling relationship has never been publicly established, and Omar has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
TMZ reported that the marriage is again receiving attention while federal investigators examine possible immigration-related wrongdoing and the August academic paper circulates outside university circles for the first time. Its report also noted plainly that the brother claim remains unproven and that Omar has repeatedly denied both the alleged family relationship and any immigration-related wrongdoing.
The outlet identified Elmi as a University of Bristol doctoral researcher and traced the latest disclosure to his August paper about fieldwork on violence against LGBTQ people in Kenya. It also placed the new detail against the established 2009 marriage, his 2012 departure from Minnesota and the 2017 divorce that formally ended the union eight years after it began.
Omar’s own recent answer did little to quiet the controversy.
During an interview with Chris Hayes, Omar called the allegation “insane.” When Hayes followed up and asked whether she was related to Elmi at all, she answered: “Not to my knowledge.”
The outlet’s earlier follow-up reported that Omar’s office called the response sarcastic and said she has “repeatedly and unequivocally” denied what the spokesperson described as a baseless conspiracy theory.
That denial belongs in the record. So does the fact that “not to my knowledge” is an extraordinarily slippery answer to a question that most people could answer with one word.
The paper surfaced while the broader investigation and its political fallout were already accelerating.
The Obama-era investigation is relevant context as renewed federal scrutiny continues:
The Associated Press has confirmed the basic public-record timeline: Omar was married to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi from 2009 until their 2017 divorce, and her marriage and divorce filings used the name Ilhan Omar. The outlet also reported that the long-running kinship allegation remains disputed.
No criminal charge has established that Omar married a sibling, committed marriage fraud or made false immigration statements. Any suggestion otherwise would run ahead of the public evidence.
But the political optics are brutal.
The man Omar legally married while her complicated domestic timeline remained tied to another Ahmed has now published a paper identifying himself as gay. At the same time, the brother allegation is under renewed scrutiny, Omar’s “not to my knowledge” answer is still ricocheting across the country, and investigators are reportedly digging through old immigration records.
Being gay is neither wrongdoing nor evidence of fraud. The extraordinary part is how one already disputed marriage keeps producing new facts that make the official story look more—not less—complicated.
Omar wants the public to dismiss the entire controversy as a smear. Her critics want investigators to follow every document wherever it leads.
Elmi’s own published words do not settle the brother question.
They do guarantee that the questions surrounding this marriage are not going away.
