Saylor remains in serious but stable condition in the hospital.

The New York Post has the latest update on her condition:

Little Saylor Graham is in serious but stable condition in the wake of the tragedy, which claimed the lives of three other students and a teacher, Central Oregon Daily reported.

She was already well known in the community for her bubbly personality and her pink glasses, and as the high school’s adopted “Sparrow” — meaning the teenagers helped raise money to fund her medical expenses.

“Saylor is the definition of light and joy. And one of those kids that, you know, when she’s in the room. You can’t think of anything else other than what Saylor’s doing; ‘I need to get to know her,’” Matt Sampson, Sparrow USA’s executive director, told the outlet.

“She’s just very inspirational, very joyful, very courageous, and inspirational.”

Saylor was adopted by Bend Senior High School as part of the nationwide program in the 2024-25 academic year.

According to a 2024 announcement, the “sweet, happy, adorable, and resilient” girl battles CASK, a gene mutation that impacts her physical and cognitive development, as well as dysphagia, a disorder that makes it difficult for her to swallow food and drink.

At the time, she was a 5-year-old Kindergartener at Silver Rail Elementary School, the same school where John, 17, would unleash the bloodshed years later.

She was also nonverbal and frequently used a wheelchair, though was able to walk on her own.

As part of the Sparrow program, the high schoolers were encouraged to “earn money for Saylor through sponsored community service, supporting her and cheering her on as her family continues to navigate her medical journey.”

“Saylor was the Sparrow catalyst for Bend High School when she was a Sparrow, and the little girl was used to teach kids things that many of us probably couldn’t have taught them without her,” Sampson told the newspaper.

“She’s a fighter, and we’re praying that she fights through this and her family. I want to express to her family how much we love them and how valuable they are to us,” he continued.

25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert was also killed in the shooting, while 54-year-old teacher Becky Drury sustained serious injuries and is still in the hospital.

This X post shared a photo of each of the teachers, along with a statement from Lambert’s family:

Megan Lambert Family Statement:

To tell you about who Megan was would take 25 years. Megan was a native Central Oregonian. She grew up in Bend. She had a passion for playing sports, especially volleyball. She was a volleyball coach. She actually turned down pay for her first season as a coach so families who couldn’t afford to participate could have the chance to play the sport she loved. Her goal was to be an educator and teach in the school district she loved growing up in. She graduated from Mountain View High School in 2019. She graduated from Boise State in May of 2023. She traveled abroad to Barcelona Spain with TEFL Iberia. Silver Rail was her first job as a teacher, though she subbed there for many years before through High Desert ESD. She LOVED Silver Rail – this was her dream job. Megan was compassionate and had a huge heart. She always fought for the underdog and those with special needs. She was an incredible sister, daughter, niece, and granddaughter. Her friends became her family. She was funny and opinionated, and she lit up the room.

We want the bystander who intervened to know we know he is going through a rough time, but we are grateful and we think he is a hero. You selflessly put yourself at risk for others. We would like the other families to know they are in our thoughts and prayers. Megan loved those children and so we will show you love for her.

NBC News shared a statement from Drury’s husband:

In a statement, Drury’s husband thanked people for their support.

“The kindness and concern shown to our family and everyone affected mean more than we can express,” her husband wrote.

“Right now, our focus is on my wife, Becky, and her recovery, and on supporting our family through an unimaginably difficult time,” he wrote. “We respectfully ask for privacy and space as we navigate the days ahead.”

In addition, an 8-year-old and 11-year-old boy lost their lives in the shooting.

But, their families have asked the media not to release their names out of respect for their privacy.

Fox News provided additional coverage on the victims in this clip:

Hundreds gather in heartbreak as a community mourns the four lives lost in a deadly attack at Silver Rail Elementary School.

Among those killed are 5-year-old Rhoam Summer, two boys ages 8 and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. The families of the two other boys have asked authorities to keep their names private.

Meanwhile, Fox News confirms 54-year-old teacher Becky Drury remains hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while a 7-year-old child is in serious but stable condition.

“We live in a truly special community,” Drury’s husband says, thanking neighbors for their overwhelming kindness and support.

As a memorial continues to grow outside the school, families are remembering the lives lost and honoring the brave people who stepped in to help.

What happened at Silver Rail Elementary School is a terrible tragedy.

But, it could have been even worse if not for two brave individuals who stepped up to confront the shooter.

We have learned that, along with heroic father Kaylub Giamanco who fatally shot the school shooter, an unnamed female teacher helped take him down.

The New York Times reported:

The 16-year-old who killed three children and a teacher with a shotgun at an Oregon elementary school blasted his way through a side entrance before a teacher’s heroism and a father’s quick thinking prevented even more carnage.

As the makeshift memorial in front of Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Ore., grew Friday, with donations of flowers, stuffed animals and candles, police and school officials began offering a clearer picture of how the attack unfolded — and how much worse it could have been.

They identified the shooter as Griffin J. John II, a former special education student at Silver Rail who lived with his mother, Shauntai May Nickerson, a half-mile away from the school. He carried a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun that was registered to Ms. Nickerson, according to a law enforcement official who was granted anonymity to discuss details of the case.

The teenager approached the school on foot a little before 1 p.m. Thursday — picture day at Silver Rail — from an undeveloped and partially wooded lot on the side of the 11-year-old building, which featured modern school safety features at the front entrance.

A man in a red pickup truck was driving by and saw the teenager throw his shotgun over the fence and start to climb it, the police said. The driver “verbally confronted” the gunman, who paused to open fire at him, pelting the truck with shots. The man was not injured.

The teenager then got over the fence, shot through glass panes in a set of doors on the playground side of the building and went into a special education classroom just inside the school.

Inside, he killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher, Megan Lambert, who family members described as a young educator thrilled to be working in her hometown. He also wounded a 7-year-old girl and a 54-year-old teacher.

Another teacher in the room threw her cellphone at the shooter and then tackled him, Chief Mike Krantz of the Bend Police Department said.

Outside, Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two girls at the school, had seen the red pickup get shot while driving by on his lunch break. He swerved onto the sidewalk and ran inside.

He found the gunman wrestling with the teacher who tried to stop him and shot him several times with a .40-caliber handgun that had been legally secured in his truck, the police said. The suspect, who died, was carrying 44 more rounds of ammunition.

God Bless that teacher and Kaylub Giamanco. They are both true American heroes.

Please keep all of the victims, their families, and the Bend, OR community in your prayers during this unimaginable time of grief and loss.
