A toxic chemical release at a facility in Toledo, Ohio, forced nearly 1,000 people to evacuate and others to remain indoors.
Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz told reporters on Wednesday that glycol methacrylate, an industrial coating product, was released into the air Tuesday night.
Some residents reported experiencing symptoms such as burning and watering eyes and coughing.
A first responder was injured and taken to the hospital.
Residents within a one-mile radius had to evacuate, while those within three miles were told to shelter-in-place.
“Toledo Fire & Rescue hazardous materials personnel are working with federal, state and local partners to monitor conditions, coordinate mitigation efforts, and evaluate next steps,” the city said Wednesday night, according to NBC News.
NBC News shared further:
“Based on what we are seeing right now, there is no current evidence to suggest any long-term threat to health,” Kapszukiewicz said, according to The New York Times.
However, the mayor noted the assessment could still change.
