Four suspected drug traffickers were killed in a U.S. strike on a vessel in the Caribbean Sea, according to U.S. Southern Command.
“On September 19, under the direction of #SOUTHCOM, Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere executed a lethal, kinetic strike on a go-fast vessel operating along established narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean. Confirmed intelligence revealed the vessel’s active involvement in narco-trafficking. The operation killed four narco-terrorists,” SOUTHCOM said in a statement.
The post included a video of the strike, showing a missile hitting the boat, creating a massive inferno that briefly blocked the screen.
The lethal strike follows an operation last week when a vessel was intercepted and boarded by U.S. forces, rather than destroyed, and the crew turned over to Ecuadorian authorities.
The campaign against suspected drug smuggling boats began last year, and quickly proved one of the most controversial military endeavors of the Trump administration. Democrats have vehemently protested the campaign, which they argue vets the suspected drug traffickers improperly and uses unnecessary lethal force.

The attacks have been the most noticeable new hardline tactic of the Trump administration in the war on drugs.
The U.S. has killed an estimated 231 people across 69 reported strikes over the past year. Some of the families of victims have sued the Trump administration in U.S. courts.
