Federal law enforcement agents conducted a predawn search at the Washington home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) as part of a criminal investigation, Justice Department officials announced Monday morning.
“Today in the Washington, D.C, area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” a DOJ spokesperson said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.

Omar, 44, represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis. She has been in office since 2018 and is part of a group of progressive Democrats referred to as the “Squad,” which includes Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).
President Donald Trump declared in January that the Justice Department was investigating Omar following financial disclosures that initially showed what she described as an accounting mistake that overstated her husband’s assets.
“The DOJ and Congress are looking at ‘Congresswoman’ Illhan Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars,” Trump wrote in a post. “Time will tell all.”
Vice President JD Vance said in May that the DOJ was examining allegations that Omar married her biological brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, in 2009 to help him get approved to reside in the United States.
“We’re going to investigate it,” Vance said during a White House press conference. “We’re going to take a look at it. If we think that there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime. And that’s something that the Department of Justice is looking at right now.”
Trump has also accused Omar of being connected to fraud rings across Minnesota that received more than $800 million in defrauded or suspected fraudulent funds from pandemic-era and state-run social service programs that are reimbursed by the federal government. One such sham charity, Feeding Our Future, scammed the state for more than $250 million.
Omar has adamantly denied any involvement or connection to the fraudsters, stating in May that the claims were “flat-out false.”
Omar sponsored the MEALS Act in March 2020, which removed guardrails on child nutrition programs, and conservative critics such as Minnesota state Rep. Kristin Robbins, a Republican, argued made it easier for those programs to be defrauded.

Unlike most federal properties that are led by the DOJ’s FBI, the Omar house search was led by agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Department of Homeland Security’s primary investigative arm.
MAJOR ICE OPERATION UNDERWAY IN CALIFORNIA: ‘GO AFTER ANYBODY’
The agency that handled the search, HSI, focuses on investigating, disrupting, and dismantling transnational criminal organizations and terrorist networks that threaten or seek to exploit federal customs and immigration laws, according to its website. ICE’s other arm, Enforcement and Removal Operations, is responsible for arresting and detaining illegal immigrants through judicial removal proceedings.
The White House and the DHS referred the Washington Examiner to the DOJ for further comment.
