The Trump administration praised Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Wednesday for deporting over 2,000 known or suspected terrorists, as the country prepares to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
The Department of Homeland Security said ICE has arrested more than 2,150 known or suspected terrorists so far during President Donald Trump’s second term. It deported 2,015 between Jan. 20, 2025, and Wednesday. The Washington Examiner asked the DHS how those numbers compare to previous time periods but did not receive a response.
“As we reflect on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the brave men and women of ICE continue to carry out their duty to protect the homeland and keep the American people safe,” Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who oversees ICE, told Fox News Digital, adding that the anniversary underscored the department’s commitment to “eternal vigilance.”
The announcement comes as the United States will remember the 9/11 terrorist attack on New York on Friday. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in 2001 when Islamic jihadists flew two planes into the twin towers. In the years since, many first responders and those near Ground Zero, including hundreds of New York City Fire Department members, have also died due to cancer and other diseases from toxic dust exposure around the site.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani released thousands of files on Tuesday that he said proved officials lied to residents about air quality in the aftermath of the attacks.

“There was poison in the air and on the ground and in the window sills and in your air conditioners and covering your pets and your clothes, and it stayed there for months. Everyone knew. And now it’s very clear that the city knew as well,” 9/11 survivor Jon Stewart said during Mamdani’s press briefing.
The Sept. 11 attacks provoked sweeping changes in Washington, pushing the U.S. into a yearslong war in Afghanistan and Iraq targeting radical Islamic terrorists. The 9/11 attacks also provoked new security systems in the U.S., particularly through the creation of the DHS, the federal department tasked with protecting airports and other critical infrastructure from terrorism.
