Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) said he is “considering” launching a 2028 White House bid.

“I’ll make a decision after this election sometime,” Kelly said.

“At the appropriate time,” he added.

Fox News shared further:

Kelly was in the middle of an argument about how the economy no longer works for young Americans when an audience member interrupted him with a suggestion about his political future.

“I’m the son of two cops who went to public schools and went on to become a Navy pilot and then an astronaut and now a U.S. senator. I was fortunate,” he said.

Just as Kelly mentioned becoming a senator, someone in the crowd shouted “president,” prompting a two-word response from the Arizona Democrat.

“We’ll see,” said Kelly, whose short response drew cheers from the crowd.

Kelly, who is up for re-election in 2028, is routinely featured in 2028 Democratic presidential primary surveys and often polls below more established contenders like former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Still, Kelly has begun gaining support as his national profile rises. He drew widespread attention in Nov. 2025 after appearing in a video alongside other Democratic lawmakers telling U.S. service members that it is their duty to disobey illegal orders, including those issued by the executive branch.

“Kelly is already showing up in 2028 Democratic primary polls, though he trails bigger names like Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom. But his national profile has been climbing fast, especially after appearing in video last November where he and other Democratic lawmakers told U.S. service members it was their duty to disobey illegal orders,” Fox News wrote.

“That video triggered a criminal investigation — though a federal grand jury declined to indict. Axios reported last week that Kelly is actively eying a White House bid, with a decision coming after the midterms. Arizona law would let him run for president and Senate simultaneously, making the gamble a lot less risky,” it added.

Mark Kelly just left the door wide open for a 2028 presidential run — and the crowd in Maine loved it.

“I said that members of the military shouldn’t follow illegal orders,” Kelly said.

“It was a friendly reminder,” he added.

More from Deseret News:

Kelly has until March 20, 2028, to submit signatures for the Senate race — after some presidential primaries have already taken place, allowing Kelly to gauge his position in the national field.

Kelly is already a well-circulated name in the search for a Democratic nominee. Recent polling for the Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics show the Arizona senator is near the top of the pack when comparing the top contenders for the party nomination.

About 17% of Utah voters say Kelly would be one of their top three choices as well as 14% of voters nationwide, placing him fifth-highest on the list out of 12 potential candidates.

But polling doesn’t show any one candidate with a clear lead in the upcoming primary, underscoring that Democratic voters don’t have an apparent leader just yet. That could open the path for Kelly, especially if he gets an early start in the 2028 cycle.
