Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) was accused of violating “civil rights law” in a social media post about hiring interns for 2027.
“I’m hiring motivated and eager interns for the Spring 2027 semester in my Boston office,” Markey wrote.
“BIPOC, LGBTQ+, working class, veterans, and other underrepresented candidates with Massachusetts ties are encouraged to apply. Applications are due Monday, November 9th,” he added.
More from Markey’s internship application:
“Crazy that a United States Senator can openly violate civil rights law on Twitter,” Christopher Rufo commented.
“Hey @CivilRights, time to investigate Ed for hiring discrimination,” he added.
“Uh oh, @HarmeetKDhillon,” Corey A. DeAngelis said.
One X user rebutted by saying the post isn’t technically illegal because of the term “encouraged to apply.”
“‘Encouraged to apply’ is the key phrase. Seeking a broader applicant pool isn’t illegal. Likely why he put it this way. It suggests a possible intent to classify applicants by demography and/or to the treat them differently, but it’d be illegal at stage 2, not here,” X user Dan Morenoff said.
“Serious question: are senators exempt from laws and regulations against brazenly racist/sexist/otherwise discriminatory hiring practices?” questioned Mollie Hemingway, Editor-in-Chief of The Federalist.
“Yes,” Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Justice Department Harmeet Dhillon responded.
Nevertheless, Markey received tons of criticism for his post.
Unsurprisingly, Markey obsessed over Trump in his debate this week against Republican challenger John Deaton.
