U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.
The Ilhan Omar scandal just keeps growing.
Already, how her financial disclosure statements grew from $50,000 to $30 million, then dropped back again is under investigation. So is her immigration documentation which apparently was the subject of a law enforcement raid on her home this week.
Now those questions have grown, with a report confirming that she had her birthdate, in public records, changed after she joined Congress in 2018.
It is the New York Post that has revealed her staff “helped get her birthdate changed in public records once the Minnesota Democrat was elected to Congress in 2018, a switch that has since spurred frenzied accusations that she misrepresented her age to secure US citizenship.”
“The alteration could offer a big clue as to what federal immigration agents were searching for when they raided her DC home Monday: If the congresswoman is actually one year older than she’s claimed to be, that would mean she couldn’t have legally become a US citizen in 2000, critics contend,” the report said.
Omar’s birthdate had been listed in the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library as Oct. 4, 1981, as well as on reference sites such as Wikipedia and in media outlets like the BBC, for the entire time she served in the state House and for several months into her congressional term, the report said.
But she apparently had her staff work to change that, to 1982, in May 2019 “after a video from a political opponent went viral that claimed Omar was fibbing about her age, according to emails reviewed by The Post.”
She’s claimed she got citizenship through her father “as a minor in 2000,” but the report suggested that may not have been the case.
“On May 17, 2019, Library staff were informed by Rep. Omar’s congressional staff that her birth year was incorrect and requested that we change it to 1982,” wrote the director of the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library in an email just days after the change was made.
Omar repeatedly has denied any misbehavior, blaming all of her troubles on President Donald Trump’s “obsession” with her.
This week she called it “political intimidation.”
It was Homeland Security Investigations agents who raided her Washington home this week, on a court ordered signed by a judge.
Critics have charged that for her to become a citizen as a minor her father had to naturalize, and she had to still be a minor.
A commentary by JD Rucker suggested that her obtaining citizenship through her father also would be problematic, even if she was still a minor.
“For years she has sold America the clean version. Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was an educator. The family fled Somalia’s civil war with the rest of the refugees and arrived in 1995. Her 2020 memoir paints the same picture of ordinary people escaping chaos,” he explained.
But he said now Post reports confirm historian and Oxford doctoral researcher Mohamed Haji Ingiriis confirmed Hur “misrepresented himself as a refugee” to U.S. authorities.
Actually, he was a full colonel in Siad Barre’s military regime, the blog post said.
“Ilhan’s father was never an educator,” Ingiriis said. “Nur Said was a military officer who was loyal to the regime until the end. He was part and parcel of those who caused and created the mayhem they ‘fled’ to live comfortably in the United States. … He only fled when the dictatorship fell in 1991. He was the beneficiary of the military regime and should not have been given asylum whatsoever.”
Rucker explained, “Former army officer Yusuf Ismail Faraton, who served with him and later moved to Minneapolis, said Nur led multiple brigades, became a regiment commander, and played a significant role in the Somali-Ethiopian war of 1977-78. After the regime collapsed he ran the Daynuunaay military school. The family went to Kenya first, then claimed refugee status in America.”
The report the Barre regime “killed as many as 200,000 people. In the north it conducted a campaign against the Isaaq clan that flattened cities with aerial bombardment, poisoned wells, and laid more than a million landmines on grazing lands.”
The United Nations, in 2001, accused the faction of “genocide.”
