The New York Post attributed the interpretation to lip reader Jeremy Freeman. According to Freeman, Trump told Mamdani that the federal government would look after him while asking the mayor to look after New Yorkers.
Freeman also interpreted Trump as saying the two could make their working relationship succeed. He said Trump wanted to support the mayor and invited Mamdani to the White House to see how the president works.
The report concerns a low-volume exchange after the officials met. Because the conversation was not released as clear audio, the precise wording cannot be independently confirmed.
Neither the White House nor City Hall had published that private exchange as an official transcript at publication time.
What is confirmed is that the meeting itself was substantive. President Trump and Mamdani met for roughly an hour at Gracie Mansion and then appeared together before reporters.
