Democrat candidate Gina Hinojosa, who is running for Texas governor against Gov. Greg Abbott, is now being supported by the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Abbott’s campaign released a press release revealing that CAIR Action, a 501(c)(4) affiliate of CAIR dedicated to “engaging, educating, and mobilizing Muslim voters,” supports Hinojosa in the race.
The state of Texas declared CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as Foreign Terrorist and Transnational Criminal Organizations under the Texas Penal Code and Texas Property Code in 2025.
The proclamation, signed by Abbott, notes that CAIR is an “Islamist organization that, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations, was founded as a ‘front group’ for ‘Hamas and its support network’ in the United States.”
The announcement comes alongside Abbott’s campaign highlighting how Hinojosa has actively advocated for the Muslim community in the Texas Legislature.
During the 85th Legislative Session, Hinojosa voted against House Bill 45, legislation that requires the Texas Supreme Court to adopt rules and provides judicial instructions ensuring foreign law, judgments, and arbitration awards do not supersede Texas law in certain family law cases. The bill ensures that all family law cases comply with U.S. and Texas constitutional protections and public policy and keeps foreign laws out of these cases.
Hinojosa was just one of eight members of the Texas House to vote against the bill, and she support judges using Sharia in Texas courts.
In the 88th Legislative Session, Hinojosa voted against Senate Bill 1900, a Texas law that allowed Abbott to designate organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as foreign terrorist organizations. It was signed into law by Abbott in 2023, just two years before Abbott declared both CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as terror organizations.
Additionally, during the 89th Legislative Session, Hinojosa voted against House Bill 4211, a bill that regulates business entity-owned residential developments by requiring disclosures, banning discrimination in ownership transfers, and mandating U.S. or Texas courts for disputes. Abbott said the bill blocks residential developments “from creating Sharia compounds.”
“It’s no surprise that a known Islamic terror organization prefers Gina Hinojosa in the governor’s race,” Texans for Greg Abbott Press Secretary Eduardo Leal said. “Gina Hinojosa has voted in favor of Muslim-only compounds across Texas, voted against giving the State of Texas the authority to designate foreign terrorist organizations, and supported judges using Sharia law in Texas courts.”
“Gina’s pattern of support for a foreign terrorist organization is not only dangerous, but shows she consistently sides with radical extremists over law-abiding Texans,” he added.
Hinojosa’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.
