Harmeet Dhillon is resigning as the Justice Department’s assistant attorney general for civil rights, Fox News reported Thursday, a high-profile departure following Republicans’ midterm losses.

Sources confirmed the resignation to Fox News correspondent David Spunt. His report did not specify her final day or a reason for leaving.

The longtime Trump ally helped overhaul the Civil Rights Division, shifting its priorities toward religious liberty, gun rights and scrutiny of state voter rolls.

Bloomberg Law first reported that Dhillon had told allies she would leave after the elections, citing four people familiar with her plans. Two said an announcement could come Thursday.

Dhillon’s departure follows a sweeping personnel shake-up inside the division. After a wave of career attorney departures, she recruited dozens of lawyers with backgrounds in conservative advocacy.

Under her leadership, the division established a section devoted to Second Amendment rights and pursued litigation involving immigration, voter registration records and alleged antisemitism on college campuses.

President Donald Trump nominated Dhillon in December 2024. The Senate confirmed her on April 3, 2025, and she was sworn in four days later.

Before joining the administration, Dhillon founded the Dhillon Law Group and the Center for American Liberty, building a national profile through legal battles over free speech, religious freedom, and government coronavirus restrictions.

She also served as a Republican Party official and a campaign lawyer for Trump.

Dhillon had already discussed a return to private practice. During an August interview with Bloomberg, she indicated that she planned to return to her California-based law firm after her government service.

The reports did not establish that the midterm results prompted her resignation.
