A man is dead after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in northern England on Saturday, triggering a major emergency response and the evacuation of the entire park.
The incident unfolded shortly after 1:30 p.m. near Doncaster. Police now say the man died at the scene.
His identity has not been released.
South Yorkshire Police said officers received the first report at 1:35 in the afternoon and learned that a man had entered the tiger enclosure before being attacked, prompting officers, paramedics, an air ambulance, a doctor, and park personnel to converge on the attraction while visitors were moved out and the area was secured. The force initially described the man’s injuries as serious while officers worked to reach his family, confirmed that the tiger remained inside the enclosure throughout the emergency, said there was no wider danger to the public or nearby residents, and warned people against sharing the distressing footage that had already begun circulating online as investigators stayed at the scene to reconstruct the entry, attack, and full emergency response timeline.
The later update was the one everyone feared.
What began as a serious-injury response had become a fatal investigation before the park’s normal closing time.
BBC News carried the later police confirmation that the man died at the scene, that his family had been informed and was receiving support from officers, and that the tiger was uninjured after the fatal encounter despite early online fears that the animal might also have been harmed. The updated account also made clear that the tiger never left its enclosure, the public was never exposed to an escaped animal, and the park remained under police control as inquiries continued—important facts at a moment when fragmentary videos, unverified witness claims, and rumors about the emergency response were racing far ahead of the information authorities had actually confirmed.
Two ambulances, an air ambulance, and a doctor were dispatched as the emergency unfolded. Visitors were moved out while police and park personnel secured the area.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park said its emergency response procedures were activated as soon as the serious incident was reported and that staff were working closely with police and other authorities to determine how the man entered the enclosure and what happened afterward. The attraction closed for the rest of Saturday, will remain closed on Sunday, October 11, and stressed that the safety and wellbeing of visitors, employees, and animals remained its highest priority while the investigation continued and the park dealt with the aftermath.
Police have not explained how the man got into the enclosure or why he entered it. Those are now central questions for investigators.
The public facts establish the entry and the fatal attack, but they do not establish his motive or state of mind.
Authorities are also urging people not to share the graphic footage circulating online. That is the right call.
There is no public-interest case for turning a man’s final moments into viral entertainment.
For now, the essential facts are brutally simple: a man crossed into a tiger enclosure, the tiger attacked, and he did not survive. The animal was uninjured, the public was kept safe, and an investigation is underway.
