Billy Joel Shares Sobering Health Update: ‘I’m Not Allowed to Drive’

Billy Joel has finally been told he cannot drive.

Honestly, that order might have arrived about 22 years late.

The Piano Man famously drove his Mercedes into a Long Island house in 2004, the third reported car wreck involving Joel in just two years. Nobody was seriously hurt, and police said there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol — but the story instantly became part of rock-and-roll lore.

This time, however, the reason Joel is staying out of the driver’s seat is no punchline.

The 77-year-old music legend revealed that the effects of hydrocephalus have made driving off-limits as he undergoes more medical testing and waits to learn whether he will ever be cleared to perform live again.

Billy Joel may never set foot on stage again. The “Piano Man” singer revealed in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter that between his age and his hydrocephalus, the condition he has which impacts his balance, he’s limited on certain activities.

In a rare interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Joel said his health is generally good but that hydrocephalus has affected his balance. He must complete a series of tests before doctors can determine what comes next.

“I can’t drive right now. I’m not allowed to drive,” Joel said.

That is a major restriction for a man whose music and personal life have long been tied to cars and motorcycles. Joel owns a massive collection of vintage motorcycles and is now preparing to auction more than 70 of them through Christie’s.

Joel canceled his scheduled concerts in May 2025 after doctors diagnosed him with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition involving a buildup of fluid in the brain. He later underwent surgery, but his return to the stage remains uncertain.

His neurologist gave a sobering explanation for the caution: for Joel, the sound, light, stress and physical energy of a concert can make every performance feel like suffering another concussion.

That does not sound like the sort of warning any performer should brush aside, especially one who has spent decades pounding the keys under arena lights.

The Gateway Pundit notes that Joel has also experienced memory, vision and hearing problems connected to the condition. He underwent surgery in 2025 and canceled his scheduled performances last May after doctors advised him not to take the stage.

Now he is waiting on another round of testing before he can know whether performing is still possible. The medical restrictions reach well beyond concert dates.

Joel cannot drive, and his neurologist has warned that the intense sound, light, stress and energy of a live show can hit him like another concussion. That combination explains why doctors are being so cautious even though Joel says he otherwise feels healthy.

The update leaves no return date, no farewell performance and no guarantee that fans will see him behind a piano onstage again. It also makes the driving prohibition easy to understand, even if fans cannot resist remembering the singer’s earlier adventures behind the wheel.

Back in April 2004, NME reported that Joel lost control of his Mercedes and crashed into a house in Bayville, New York. It was his third vehicle accident in two years.

The singer suffered a minor cut to one finger, while nobody inside the house was injured. Police said there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs and no crime was suspected.

The timing made the wreck especially memorable. In January 2003, Joel had smashed a Mercedes into a tree and spent nearly two weeks in the hospital, and in June 2002 he had crashed another Mercedes after losing control.

The 2004 house collision completed an unfortunate trio that has followed him for decades. Those old incidents are unrelated to the hydrocephalus now keeping him from driving, but they explain why today’s serious health announcement landed with an unavoidable comic echo.

So yes, the driving jokes practically write themselves — and one X user promptly rewrote part of the Joel catalog for the occasion:

Billy Joel says he’s not allowed to drive. Releases revised hits:

“We Didn’t Call an Uber”
“It’s Still Ten and Two to Me”
“Durango Man” (Gimme a lift in your Durango, man)

But behind the humor is a genuinely difficult update for one of America’s most enduring performers.

Joel has not announced his retirement. He is waiting on the tests, following his doctors’ instructions and leaving open the possibility that he could perform again if his condition improves enough to make it safe.

Here’s hoping the Piano Man gets better news soon. Until then, somebody else should hold the car keys — and probably should have been holding them since 2004.
