The Maine Wire said one of its reporters was nearly run over after a heated confrontation while filming a report outside the Bangor Comprehensive Treatment Center.
“Some lunatic just attempted to murder our reporter @iAmJoeSokol. We have the entire chilling interaction on camera. We will take all necessary actions to demand justice,” the outlet wrote.
“You’re invading people’s privacy here. Confidentiality, you realize that?” the driver in the video told reporter Joe Sokol.
“I’m invading people’s privacy? By being in public with a camera? And doing a report?” Sokol responded.
The driver then drove away, as Sokol described the man as “probably intoxicated.”
While Sokol continued his report, he appeared to narrowly avoid a collision with a vehicle.
The camera fell and Sokol could be heard repeating the vehicle’s license plate number.
The outlet shared additional footage of how close the vehicle came to hitting Sokol.
Sokol confronted the center’s owner, saying “your patient just tried to run me over.”
The owner asked Sokol if he was trying to intimidate her and demanded he leave the property.

Fox News shared further:
In a comment to Fox News Digital, Sokol confirmed that he was investigating an addiction clinic and that police were notified and on the scene. Though the suspect was identified, Sokol was not yet sure if he was apprehended. He added that this was far from the first time he faced an attempt on his life.
“I currently have an active death-threat investigation that has sat on the district attorney’s desk for more than a month,” Sokol said. “I have been assaulted multiple times; one of those incidents resulted in a charge, which the state dropped last week. Violence and aggression toward Maine Wire reporters is never addressed in Bangor. About three weeks ago, my cameraman, Adam Stade, was nearly attacked by several homeless people in the city. One councilor’s wife — Michael Beck’s — actually asked the police to intervene regarding our coverage (attached). Most of the city council refuses to comment on the subject generally.”
The conservative-leaning Maine Wire also released a statement honoring Sokol reacting well under pressure and providing additional detail regarding Sokol’s investigation.
“Joe was there to ask questions about a methadone clinic that, according to The Maine Wire’s reporting, has received roughly $25 million in taxpayer funding via Medicaid. This is essentially a taxpayer-funded drug dealing operation at the heart of Bangor, Maine. We will continue to investigate this organization, its enablers, and the employees who appeared to be accessories after the fact rather than Good Samaritans,” the statement read.
“Here’s our phone call with the suspect, who admits to targeting Joe because of the content of his reporting,” the outlet wrote.

More from
The Maine Wire:
Maine Wire Editor-in-Chief Steve Robinson said the driver recognized Sokol as a reporter and confronted him in an apparent effort to interfere with his reporting.
“The bedlamite identified Sokol as a journalist and expressed a clear intent to stop him from conducting routine journalism from public property,” Robinson said in a statement.
Robinson alleged that the driver then attempted to strike Sokol with a vehicle, characterizing the incident as an attempted killing.
Sokol was able to move out of the vehicle’s path and was not injured.
Robinson said Sokol also recorded the vehicle’s license plate immediately after the encounter, allowing police to identify the driver.
“Sokol’s quick-thinking and training immediately allowed him to preserve the license plate,” Robinson said. “He is unharmed and safe.”
The Maine Wire identified the vehicle as a blue Jeep Compass bearing Maine registration 841-LZD.
Robinson further alleged that the driver may have been intoxicated and said the news organization would cooperate with police as they investigate both the driver and the circumstances preceding the encounter.
“We will cooperate fully as they investigate the driver of the Blue Jeep Compass Maine License Plate 841-LZD, as well as any nearby accessories to attempted murder who may have provided this individual with intoxicating substances before he immediately attempted vehicular homicide,” Robinson said.
Bangor police responded to the incident and are investigating, according to The Maine Wire.
