Former baseball star Mark Teixeira, who is running for Congress in Texas, endorsed the Republican candidate challenging New York Attorney General Letitia James on Monday.

In a video statement, the congressional candidate took a break from his own campaign to lend his support to Saritha Komatireddy.

“Some of you might know that I’m running for Congress down in my home state of Texas,” Teixeira said. “I’m doing that because I love this country and I want to see it safer and stronger, and that’s exactly why I’m supporting Saritha Komatireddy to be the next AG of the state of New York.”

“You need an attorney general that’s going to fight for you, that’s going to put public safety over politics, and is going to make sure New York stays one of the most prosperous, best places to live in the country,” he said.

Teixeira played for the New York Yankees before retiring from baseball in 2016 and later entering politics. The former athlete is now running for Texas’s 21st Congressional District, with the support of President Donald Trump.

As for Komatireddy, she is seeking to prevent James from winning a third term as New York’s top legal officer. Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor, has campaigned on a platform geared toward public safety and crime reduction.

The law-and-order Republican welcomed Teixeira’s support as the Nov. 3 general election quickly approaches.

“Proud to have the support of former New York Yankee Mark Teixeira, a World Series champion, three-time All-Star, and five-time Gold Glove winner who spent eight seasons in pinstripes,” Komatireddy posted on X. “Mark knows that success takes hard work, discipline, and teamwork, and I’m honored to have him join our movement for a safer New York.”

Despite Komatireddy’s challenge, it’s likely the Democratic state attorney general will keep her post for another term. A Siena University poll from September shows James leading her opponent by 13 points, and an October poll conducted by OnMessage had the incumbent 6 points ahead of Komatireddy.

Both candidates are urging New Yorkers to take advantage of early voting, which runs from Oct. 24 through Nov. 1, before Election Day.
