Alaska Election Chaos: Real Sen. Dan Sullivan’s Campaign Account Branded ‘Inauthentic’

Official portrait of Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan

Alaska’s already-bizarre Senate race just found a new level of absurdity.

The real Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan’s campaign account was temporarily suspended by X after the platform reportedly flagged it as an inauthentic account — while another man with the same name is actually on the ballot against him.

The suspension landed only days before Tuesday’s election. Sullivan’s account has since been restored, but X has not publicly explained what triggered the action.

The Alaska Landmine posted the notice Sullivan’s campaign said it received from X:

You could not make up the timing.

Sullivan is fighting for reelection in one of the races that could decide control of the U.S. Senate.

His Democratic opponent is former congresswoman Mary Peltola.

Alaska’s ranked-choice ballot also includes retired teacher Dan J. Sullivan.

The Daily Wire reports that X suspended the incumbent senator’s campaign profile Friday night under its rules against inauthentic accounts. The profile was restored by Saturday afternoon, and the platform had not provided a public explanation for the suspension.

A Republican campaign official accused Peltola’s allies of reporting the account for impersonation. Peltola’s campaign denied involvement and called the accusation unsubstantiated.

The suspension notice arrived after months of Republican warnings that the second Sullivan could confuse voters. That history made the platform’s own “inauthentic account” label on the incumbent’s real campaign profile especially explosive.

The timing also limited the campaign’s ability to reach voters during the final weekend. Even after the account returned, the unanswered suspension left both campaigns fighting over who was responsible and whether the incident was political interference or a platform mistake.

That dispute erupted in public almost immediately:

Polls open in Alaska in 83 hours and, right now, @DanSullivan_AK's account is suspended by @X after another dirty play by @MaryPeltola & co. who reported it for impersonation.

Insane how far Mary's willing to go to trick Alaskans.

The account mess is only the latest twist in a controversy that was already under state and federal investigation.

Republicans allege Democratic operatives recruited Dan J. Sullivan to confuse voters and siphon support from the incumbent.

Peltola says she knew nothing about such an effort. She has denied trying to trick Alaska voters.

The Associated Press reports that the second Sullivan received roughly 2.5% in Alaska’s open primary. That was enough to reach the four-candidate general election.

The state ballot distinguishes the incumbent with the middle initial S and labels him Republican. The other candidate uses the middle initial J and has no party affiliation.

The Justice Department has issued subpoenas while Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered a separate state investigation. No one involved in the race has been charged with a crime.

The incumbent and his allies say the second Sullivan’s name and campaign presentation could misdirect voters. The second Sullivan maintains that his candidacy is legitimate, and state courts allowed him to remain on the ballot.

Sen. Sullivan took his case directly to voters Sunday, calling the alleged scheme “the ultimate D.C. corruption” and accusing Peltola’s team of trying to rig Alaska’s ballot.

His remarks are worth watching:

JUST IN: Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan (R) is OBLITERATING Mary Peltola (D) and campaigning hard after she tried stealing his seat with a fake Dan Sullivan

CRIMINAL probes underway, and the ballots will be preserved

Alaska Public Media reports that a federal judge dismissed the Justice Department’s civil attempt to delay certification if the incumbent loses. The court found that the government offered no workable method for separating and investigating ballots without compromising voter secrecy.

The ruling did not end the criminal inquiries into the alleged recruitment effort. Federal prosecutors and Alaska authorities are still examining how the second Sullivan entered the race and whether anyone crossed a legal line.

That makes the stakes even sharper. The civil case may have hit a wall, but voters still deserve the full truth about who recruited the second Dan Sullivan, who coordinated the effort and whether any laws were broken.

And X owes an explanation too.

When the real senator’s account can be branded “inauthentic” in the final weekend of a race already defined by a same-name candidate, the platform cannot wave it away as a routine moderation hiccup.

Alaskans are being asked to sort through a ballot controversy, a federal investigation and an unexplained social-media suspension all at once. The least every institution involved can provide is transparency before the votes are counted.
