Social Security’s retirement trust fund hits zero in 2032. That is seven years away, not some distant abstraction.
Once the reserves run dry, the program can only pay what it collects, roughly 78% of promised benefits. That is an automatic 22% cut unless Congress acts. Combining the retirement and disability funds buys two years, to 2034, and still only covers about 83%.
Washington will patch it eventually, with higher payroll taxes, a later retirement age, or smaller checks. You cannot build a retirement around a coin flip in Congress. Build your own income stream now, and treat whatever Social Security pays as a bonus, not the plan.
