A heated confrontation erupted at the United Nations on Tuesday when President Donald Trump’s ambassador, Mike Waltz, found himself in an extraordinary shouting match with a top Cuban official who approached the podium and attempted to interrupt his remarks.

The dramatic exchange unfolded during a United Nations General Assembly debate over the longstanding U.S. trade embargo against Cuba. Waltz was delivering a blistering criticism of the communist regime when Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla began shouting objections, eventually leaving his seat and approaching the front of the chamber.

The confrontation quickly escalated as Waltz refused to yield, repeatedly ordering the Cuban official to move away from the podium while accusing Havana’s leadership of attempting to silence its critics.

The trouble began as Waltz accused Cuba’s ruling elite of enriching themselves while ordinary citizens endure widespread poverty, food shortages and deteriorating living conditions. He pointed to luxury properties, expensive watches and other assets allegedly accumulated by senior figures connected to the communist government.

Members of the Cuban delegation began banging on their desks and demanding a point of order as Waltz continued speaking. Rodríguez eventually approached the podium, prompting an increasingly furious response from the American ambassador.

“You can come and intimidate all you want,” Waltz declared. “I ask you to back away from this podium.”

As the Cuban foreign minister continued protesting, Waltz turned toward the General Assembly’s presiding officer and demanded intervention.

“Mr. President, this individual needs to back away from this podium. He’s not going to intimidate me, in the United States of America like he tries to intimidate political prisoners.”

The confrontation intensified when Rodríguez accused the American ambassador of dishonesty.

“You are a liar!” the Cuban official shouted.

“I’m the representative of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — BACK UP!”

“You can bring as many people as you want, PLEASE SIT DOWN.”

The moderator got flustered! The UN is a total crapshow!

I think these Cuban communists just KNOW what is coming. Rubio told Cubans to partner with the CIA, and they’re shook now.

Waltz immediately fired back, refusing to retreat as the exchange disrupted proceedings.

“This is the United States of America. Back up,” Waltz shouted.

The extraordinary scene unfolded before representatives of the international body, with officials struggling to restore order as the two diplomats traded accusations across the chamber.

The confrontation came as the General Assembly considered another resolution demanding an end to Washington’s decades-old economic embargo against Cuba, a recurring diplomatic dispute that has intensified under Trump’s administration.

Waltz defended the American position, rejecting Havana’s characterization of the sanctions as a blockade and arguing that Cuba’s economic problems stem largely from decades of communist mismanagement.

Cuban officials, meanwhile, accused Washington of inflicting widespread economic suffering on the island’s population through increasingly restrictive sanctions. Following the confrontation, Waltz took to social media to defend his remarks and accuse the Cuban government of attempting to suppress uncomfortable information about its leadership.

“The Castro regime has profited at the expense of the Cuban people with luxury cars, expensive watches and a private island resort,” Waltz wrote on X.

He further accused Cuban officials of attempting to disrupt his presentation because of the allegations he was making about the regime’s wealth.

The General Assembly’s annual resolution against the embargo is nonbinding, meaning any vote demanding its removal would not itself force Washington to change American law.
