President Donald Trump will host leaders from the Western Hemisphere for a Shield of the Americas event in New York City on Tuesday afternoon.
Trump established the group in 2026 to fight off cartel violence and drug trafficking in South and North America, first convening the group for a summit in Doral, Florida, in March. At the summit, Trump announced the creation of the “Americas Counter Cartel Coalition” with the goal of bringing drug violence from organized cartels to a halt in the Western Hemisphere.

Trump is expected to meet with the coalition during Tuesday’s Shield of the Americas event, according to Reuters.
“The United States will no longer permit threats to America to gain a foothold anywhere in the Western Hemisphere — and if necessary, we will use our unmatched military might to secure the vital national interests of the United States,” Trump has said during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday morning.
