WATCH: CNN Admits Ilhan Omar Investigation Was Started Under Biden!

CNN just undercut one of the loudest defenses being offered for Rep. Ilhan Omar.

The network’s own legal analyst acknowledged that an investigation involving the Minnesota Democrat began while Joe Biden was president and was later reopened under President Donald Trump.

That matters because Omar and her allies have tried to frame the entire case as a political invention of the Trump administration.

NOW: ILHAN OMAR HAS ALL BUT LOST CNN.

Even JAKE TAPPER just said that if she really fabricated her birth date to obtain citizenship, she should've gone to the BIDEN DOJ and admitted it, get a slap on the wrist and walk!

During the segment, CNN anchor Jake Tapper asked whether Omar would have been better off approaching the Biden Justice Department if the underlying allegation were true.

Legal analyst Elie Honig then made the larger point: some investigation, he said, began under the Biden administration and was reopened under Trump.

Honig said that history could weaken any later argument that the case is entirely selective or vindictive.

CNN reports that Omar had been under criminal investigation before Trump returned to office. Biden-era investigators brought no charges, and the matter did not advance nearly as far as the current case, according to people familiar with the investigation.

The network says the case was reopened last year. The current inquiry is examining possible false statements on immigration and other government documents, along with whether a broader conspiracy existed.

CNN also reports that investigators are looking at whether Omar or her late father misstated her age when she obtained citizenship in 2000. Omar has denied wrongdoing, and no allegation has been proven in court.

There is an important distinction here. The public record includes more than one investigative thread involving Omar, and they have not all focused on the same conduct.

A 2024 Biden Justice Department inquiry scrutinized her finances, campaign spending, and contacts with a foreign citizen. The current Trump-era case has pushed much further into immigration paperwork and possible recent false statements.

The Daily Caller reported in January that federal prosecutors in Washington and the Justice Department’s public integrity unit opened the financial inquiry in June 2024.

Investigators reviewed financial disclosures, campaign records, and related material. The inquiry reportedly lost momentum after agents did not find evidence warranting further action at the time, and prosecutors made no public charging announcement from that review.

That does not prove the current immigration allegations. It does establish that federal scrutiny of Omar did not suddenly appear when Trump returned to the White House, and that earlier scrutiny was substantive enough to involve federal prosecutors and the public integrity unit.

The report said Omar denied wrongdoing and argued that years of investigations had found nothing. Prosecutors did not publicly announce charges from that 2024 review.

It also shows why careful language matters. The Biden-era financial review, the broader history described by CNN, and the current immigration-focused investigation overlap around the same public figure but are not identical in scope.

The current case has now moved far beyond a quiet review of records. Federal agents executed a judge-approved search at Omar’s Washington home Monday morning, and investigators reportedly carried away boxes of material.

The escalation continued with family subpoenas and the seizure of Omar’s phone:

The Associated Press reports that authorities seized Omar’s phone and issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas, including subpoenas to some of her relatives.

The subpoenas are tied to a Minnesota grand jury gathering evidence about potential fraud in immigration paperwork. A subpoena is an investigative demand, not proof that its recipient committed a crime.

Omar has not been charged. The scope of the inquiry remains partly sealed, and prosecutors have not publicly laid out their full evidence.

AP also reports that D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said several investigations involving Omar are underway, including an inquiry into her financial disclosures. Pirro said prosecutors would follow the facts and bring a case if they establish a crime.

Omar answered the search by accusing the Trump administration of targeting a political enemy and weaponizing federal law enforcement. She has denied wrongdoing and says the allegations against her are baseless.

The expanding list of investigative steps now includes the warrant, family subpoenas, a disputed birth-year question, and a parallel financial probe:

Ilhan Omar's bad week, by the numbers:

1⃣ A warrant reportedly citing false statements, immigration fraud & conspiracy
2⃣ Grand jury subpoenas for her family
3⃣ A birth year changed from 1981 to 1982
4⃣ A second federal probe into her finances.

That defense now has to contend with CNN’s own timeline.

If the investigation began under Biden and was later reopened under Trump, it cannot honestly be described as a case created from nothing by the current administration.

That still does not establish Omar’s guilt. Investigators must prove any charge with admissible evidence, and Omar is entitled to due process.

But political office should not create immunity either. If officials have evidence that government documents were falsified, they should follow that evidence wherever it leads.

The next major development will be whether prosecutors file charges or reveal enough of the warrant record to show exactly what they believe happened.

Until then, one fact is harder to dismiss: the federal scrutiny predates Trump’s return, and CNN just said so on air.
