A spectacular play turned into a nightmare for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton on Sunday.
Thornton hauled in a 55-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes late in the fourth quarter against the Las Vegas Raiders. He popped back to his feet and started to celebrate—then immediately crumpled when he realized how badly his left ankle had been injured.
The footage is difficult to watch. Thornton’s adrenaline appeared to carry him through the catch and all the way back upright before the pain and the condition of his ankle registered.
The play is almost impossible to process in real time:
The early viral description called the ankle broken, but the first reliable medical update was more precise: Thornton suffered a dislocated ankle. There has not yet been a confirmed public report of a fracture.
That awful moment came at the end of the best game of Thornton’s NFL career.
He finished with five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns. The 55-yard reception put Kansas City in position for the go-ahead score, and running back Kenneth Walker III punched it in on the very next play.
The broadcast account captured both the huge performance and the sudden exit:
CBS Sports reported that Thornton had already set career highs for receiving yards and touchdowns before the injury. He entered Sunday with six receptions for 108 yards on the season, then nearly matched that yardage total in one afternoon.
The Chiefs survived the scare-filled finish and beat the Raiders 30-27, improving to 4-0 while handing Las Vegas its first loss. Thornton’s catch became one of the decisive plays of the game, even though he never got to enjoy it.
The injury also landed at a brutal point in Thornton’s career. A former second-round pick by New England, he had finally found a real role as Kansas City’s downfield weapon after a slow start with the Patriots.
The Kansas City Chiefs noted when they re-signed him in March that Thornton led the team with eight receptions of at least 25 yards last season. He produced a career-best 438 receiving yards in 2025 while averaging 23.1 yards per catch, giving Mahomes the vertical threat the offense had been searching for.
Sunday looked like the next leap forward. Instead, it ended with players from both teams gathered around Thornton as he was placed in an air cast and taken off the field on a cart.
There was at least one encouraging development after the game. Doctors put the ankle back into place, and Thornton was able to travel home with the team rather than remain in Las Vegas.
Ian Rapoport shared the latest update, including what comes next:
Head coach Andy Reid said after the game that the injury did not look good. The full evaluation and second opinion will determine whether there is additional damage and how long Thornton will be sidelined.
Football can turn in an instant. Thornton made the kind of catch players dream about, finished the biggest game of his professional life, and then saw the celebration vanish before it could begin.
Here is hoping the medical news is better than the scene looked—and that Thornton gets another chance to finish what was shaping up to be a breakout season.
