What’s going down in Russia?

Early Tuesday morning, a U.S. military aircraft landed in Moscow.

The arrival of the aircraft has surprised many geopolitical analysts who reported there were no public reports regarding any U.S. scheduled diplomatic meetings for Tuesday.

NBC News was the first to confirm the report:

Mystery swirled around a U.S. military transport aircraft that on Tuesday landed in Moscow, according to tracking data.

It was not known who was on board the plane and why it was in Russia. When asked, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he did not have information about the aircraft.

U.S. military officials, the White House, the U.S. embassy in Moscow and Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to questions about the flight’s mission.

Data from FlightRadar24 tracking site showed that a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III approached Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow just after 10 a.m. local time (3 a.m. ET) after taking off from Riga, the capital of Latvia, two hours earlier.

The plane had departed from the U.S. Air Force’s Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday afternoon just before 5 p.m. ET., the data showed.

Take a look at the flight tracking data:

Newsweek attempted to get a comment from the U.S. European Command for some answers:

A spokesperson for the U.S. European Command said they had no information to offer when approached about the tracking data on Tuesday. The Pentagon referred queries to the U.S. Air Force, which has been contacted for comment.

The Latvian Defense Ministry told Newsweek that the flight had been “properly coordinated and authorized for operation” within the country’s airspace, but said it could not provide any more information because it was not operated by its military.

Columnist for The Sunday Times Mark Urban offered the following theories:

Theories on today’s highly unusual movement of a US military aircraft to Moscow Vnukovo airport
1. Prisoner swap
2. Mission by senior intelligence official to warn against escalation by Russia, eg in Baltics
3. New diplomatic opening pic.twitter.com/OhqlHYQeKs
