President Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday that Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico’s disappearance from the campaign trail earlier this month was either because of a “mental illness” or food poisoning from eating meat.

“He’s going around to so many barbecues,” Trump said while rallying in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s probably why — either that or he has a mental illness — he disappeared for 12 to 14 days. It’s actually probably 14 if you really look at it. Missing in action.”

Earlier this month, Talarico was absent from the campaign trail for over a week. His campaign claimed he was suffering from the flu, but social media gossip proliferated that the disappearance was the result of other factors. Talarico, who did not release any video during his absence, put the matter to rest after appearing at the Austin City Limits music festival.

Talarico has Type I diabetes, an autoimmune disease, which some have speculated could have caused a longer recovery time and complications from the flu.

“Now I happen to think he was food poisoned by meat because he can’t stand it,” Trump said, referring to prior claims Talarico made in 2022 about supporting efforts to reduce meat consumption and a “non-meat campaign.” Talarico has denied being a vegan.

“You ever see him go to a barbecue and he’s trying to show, ‘I love the meat, I love it.’ Look, and then you see him. Where is he? He’s behind the tent puking. He’s sick as a dog,” Trump added.

Trump will speak in Lubbock later Tuesday evening, marking his fourth visit to Texas in recent weeks to stump for Republican candidate Ken Paxton. He previously spoke in Denton and San Antonio earlier this month.

Talarico will hold an overlapping rally in Lubbock on Tuesday night. He is in a close race with the Lone Star State’s attorney general over a seat that will help decide control of the Senate. A RealClearPolitics poll average shows Talarico leading Paxton by just under 2 percentage points in red-leaning Texas. The Cook Political Report rates the seat as a “toss-up.”
