President Donald Trump implied that last weekend’s deadly Iranian attack on a Jordanian military base, in which two U.S. service members were killed, could have been avoided if there had been “other operators.”
“They did slip something through in Jordan, and if we had other operators, you know, would have not happened, unfortunately,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday.
But Trump, sitting alongside Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in the White House’s Oval Office, did repeat that the U.S. had the “best equipment in the world” as it tries to defend its interests in the Middle East amid an uptick in strikes against Iran.
“We’ve stopped almost everything,” he said. “When you let other people do your job with the United States, we let other people do the job, and sometimes it doesn’t work out so well.
White House and Pentagon spokespeople did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner‘s requests for clarification.
Trump is expected to travel to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware for the dignified transfer process for 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Hawaii, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Texas.
Gonzales and Feehan were killed in action on Friday and Saturday, respectively, during the attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, a Royal Jordanian Air Force base.
Trump described it as “great honor” to president over the transfer and pay “our respects” to their families.

As strikes against Iran continue to escalate, Trump on Tuesday previewed an U.S. attack on Pickaxe Mountain, which Israeli intelligence has indicated could now be housing Iran’s nuclear centrifuges.
Trump also downplayed to reporters the impact that Iran’s preventing commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would have on November’s midterm elections.
