Trump Just Opened Investment Accounts for More Than 60 Million American Kids

For decades, Washington has lectured working families about “opportunity” while making it harder to save, harder to buy a home, and harder to hand the next generation anything except debt.

President Trump just turned that tired routine on its head.

The Treasury Department has completed automatic enrollment in Trump Accounts, placing an investment account within reach of more than 60 million eligible American children under 18. The White House announced Wednesday that the total number of Trump Accounts has now reached 70 million.

70 MILLION Trump Accounts and counting.

The next generation is getting a head start on the American Dream.

The result is far more concrete than another government pamphlet, blue-ribbon commission, or campaign promise. The accounts exist, the infrastructure is live, and parents can claim them now.

According to the Treasury Department’s official announcement, every eligible child under 18 with a valid Social Security number now has an account ready to be claimed. A parent or guardian must use the official app to verify identity and the relationship to the child before managing the account or opening it to contributions from relatives, friends, employers, and other qualified donors.

That distinction matters. Automatic enrollment creates the account, but parents still need to claim it.

The change eliminates the biggest silent killer of good programs: the paperwork gap that leaves millions of eligible families on the sidelines.

Treasury estimated that a voluntary sign-up system would have reached only about half of eligible children. Automatic enrollment pushes access close to universal and, by the department’s own analysis, delivers the largest gains to children in lower-income households.

That is the kind of equality Washington almost never manages to create—an open door instead of another maze.

What families actually get

Trump Accounts are tax-advantaged investment accounts held in the child’s name, with a parent or guardian serving as custodian until age 18. The money is invested in American companies during the child’s growth years, giving families something the political class has too often reserved for the already comfortable: time in the market.

The official Trump Accounts website says families may add up to $5,000 per year. At 18, the child takes control and can keep the account growing or use the money for major life steps such as education or a home, subject to the account’s tax rules.

Children born from January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2028, are eligible for the one-time $1,000 Treasury seed contribution once the account is claimed. That seed does not apply to every child in the larger automatic-enrollment group, and families should understand the difference.

The program’s long-term illustrations are also just that—illustrations based on historical market averages, not guaranteed returns.

Markets rise and fall. There is risk here, as there is with any real investment.

But that is exactly why this policy is so different from a one-time rebate check. It introduces millions of young Americans to ownership, compounding, patience, and the productive power of the American economy.

A check gets spent. An account can become a habit.

Trump chose ownership over dependency

The political divide could not be clearer.

The Left’s answer to inequality is usually another centralized program controlled by another agency and paid for with another round of borrowing. Trump’s answer is to put an asset in the child’s name and invite families, employers, charities, and communities to help it grow.

One model builds clients of the state. The other builds owners.

The legal machinery behind the rollout is not vague, either. The Treasury and IRS regulations published in the Federal Register spell out the eligibility rules, automatic-enrollment authority, claiming process, and structure for broader qualified contributions.

The temporary regulations took effect September 30 and implement the Trump Account provisions Congress enacted in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act on July 4, 2025. Eligibility generally requires that the child be under 18 for the relevant calendar year and have a valid Social Security number.

The rules also explain how Treasury can hold automatically created accounts in a master group trust until a parent or guardian claims the child’s account. That structure let the administration expand participation without exposing private taxpayer information or waiting for tens of millions of separate applications.

That means this is bigger than a branding exercise. Trump signed the framework into law through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, his administration built the machinery, and Treasury used that machinery to place tens of millions of children on the first rung of the ownership ladder.

Now the responsibility moves to parents. Claim the account and learn the rules.

Contribute what you can, even if it is modest. Let grandparents and relatives know the account exists.

A child does not need wealthy parents to benefit from an early start. The whole point is that time can do work money alone cannot.

Washington will keep producing speeches about the next generation. President Trump just gave that generation something far more useful: a real account, a real stake, and a real chance to grow with America.
