A reported contract dispute is threatening to shake up one of football’s most recognizable broadcasting partnerships, with ESPN stars Troy Aikman and Joe Buck allegedly clashing behind the scenes over a massive new television deal.
The longtime “Monday Night Football” partners reportedly got into a heated argument before Monday’s matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills at SoFi Stadium, according to Front Office Sports.
At the center of the controversy is Buck’s lucrative new contract, reportedly worth approximately $108 million over six years, while Aikman’s future with the network remains unresolved.
Buck, 57, secured his blockbuster extension last month, guaranteeing his position as ESPN’s leading NFL play-by-play announcer for years to come.
But Aikman, 59, has yet to receive a new contract offer despite spending decades alongside Buck in the broadcast booth.
The apparent disparity has reportedly created friction between the two television veterans, who have worked together for approximately 25 years.
According to Front Office Sports, Buck eventually “broke the ice” following a period of awkward silence, sparking an argument between the broadcasters about their respective contract situations.
Footage circulating online has only fueled speculation that something was wrong before kickoff.
Videos captured by Flea Flicker Football showed the two broadcasters keeping their distance during pregame activities.
One clip featured a seemingly “stressed” Buck speaking with his wife, ESPN reporter Michelle Beisner-Buck, while another showed Aikman heading toward the broadcast booth without his longtime partner.
The pair reportedly spent approximately an hour near ESPN’s pregame set without being seen interacting.
Although the footage does not establish what happened between them, the reported confrontation has raised questions about the future of one of the NFL’s most established announcing teams.
ESPN declined to comment when contacted by Front Office Sports.
The contract uncertainty comes at an especially awkward time for Aikman, whose current agreement expires at the end of the season.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback previously acknowledged that he expected negotiations to be completed before the season began.

“I thought something would be done prior to the start of this season,” Aikman said during an appearance on the “Sports Media with Richard Deitsch” podcast last month.
“I’ve never gone into a last year of a contract ever since I signed with the Dallas Cowboys. So, I thought that it would be done. It’s not. When it might get done, if it gets done, is anybody’s guess, and it’s just not something that I’m really putting a lot of energy into.”
Buck and Aikman joined ESPN in 2022 after leaving Fox Sports, where they had established themselves as one of football’s premier broadcasting duos.
Both signed five-year agreements, with Aikman finalizing his deal before Buck completed his departure from Fox.
Now, their contract negotiations appear to be moving in dramatically different directions.
Buck has also expanded his presence across Disney-owned television properties, recently guest-hosting ABC’s “Good Morning America” and appearing on “Dancing With the Stars.”
He has also hosted “ESPN Jeopardy,” further strengthening his relationship with the network.
Aikman, meanwhile, could have other opportunities if ESPN fails to secure his services.
CBS has emerged as a potential landing spot following changes to its lead NFL broadcast team, with former defensive star J.J. Watt currently occupying the top analyst position.
For ESPN, losing Aikman would mean potentially dismantling a broadcasting partnership that has become a familiar part of NFL Sundays and Monday nights for millions of viewers.
The reported dispute comes as Buck and Aikman prepare to call the Washington Commanders’ matchup against the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, California.
