Barack Obama’s presidential library has had a long list of scandals in its short life: The ground on which it sites sparked fights. Then its estimated costs exploded from about $300 million to just under a billion dollars. Then a long list of contractors claimed then never were paid for their work.
It was supposed to have a massive fund set up to maintain operations, and only a few dollars were deposited. And the finished product? It has been likened to a prison image from the Star Wars movie set.
Now the Daily Mail is reporting a “fresh humiliation” for the “eyesore.”
It seems workers at the center have announced they are organizing a union due to the “increasing workloads” at the site, as well has cutbacks in benefits.
The letter, obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times, said workers are frustrated with the leaders of the foundation running the behemoth because they expressed concerns and got in return only “vague responses.”
The result has been ‘high turnover” and employees are “continuing to leave (and) taking with them their institutional knowledge and expertise,” the letter charges.
Among their concerns: No pay increases this winter, paid time off reduced, promotions suspended, and higher charges for healthcare.
The Mail report explained “Luke Gilday, an Obama Foundation employee and member of the union organizing committee, told the Sun-Times that workers decided to unionize because they ‘don’t even have a seat at the table.'”
She said, “What we’re hoping for, and really the reason why we’re forming our union, is just because we believe we should have a say in the decisions that are being made that impact all of our lives.”
The facility has been criticized for its “death star” design, and it only opened to the public in June.
The report said the letter was signed by 68 workers, and want to call their organization the Obama Workers United, under the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31.
Union signup cards already are being circulated.
The promotions quote Obama’s comments from 2016, when he said, “If I were looking for a good job that lets me build some security for my family, I’d join a union. If I saw a problem in my workplace, I’d organize my coworkers to do something about it.”
