Tesla has begun deliveries of its long-awaited electric semi-truck, opening its first mass-production facility outside of Reno, Nevada.
The company’s CEO Elon Musk touted the new trucks in a video at the facility launch, calling the vehicle “a revolutionary truck that is capable of carrying the heaviest loads.” The company first unveiled the idea of the electric big-rig in 2017, cutting the ribbon on the production facility in Sparks, Nevada, nearly a decade later.
“Drivers are going to love driving this truck because it just has so much acceleration. It’s almost like a sports car in truck form, so it’s gonna be the funnest truck to drive in the very near future,” Musk said.
Musk also remarked on the truck’s anticipated self-driving capabilities, calling them a key safety feature for drivers on long overnight journeys, and the truck’s evasion of high diesel prices as an electric vehicle.
“This is really going to be a game-changer truck, and also it’s going to make a ton of sense economically because the cost of electricity per mile is much less than the cost of diesel, especially in these crazy times,” Musk said.

Diesel prices have largely spiked since the start of the war in Iran, after the Iranian regime cut off the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping waterway in the Middle East that is intricately tied to global energy prices.
The price of diesel has fluctuated throughout the conflict, but has hit record highs in September. According to AAA, the price of diesel sat at about $6.48 per gallon on Saturday, hitting its highest recorded average price on Tuesday at $6.5276 per gallon. The highest recorded average price for a regular gallon of gas was $5.0165 per gallon, which was recorded on June 14, 2022, under former President Joe Biden.
