A Colorado police officer was killed and three others were wounded Thursday evening after an armed suspect suddenly opened fire on responding officers near a public bus outside Denver, authorities confirmed.
The deadly confrontation erupted around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood, approximately five miles west of downtown Denver.
According to Lakewood police spokesperson John Romero, officers were dispatched to investigate reports of a suspicious individual near a Regional Transportation District bus.
When officers approached the suspect, who was attempting to board the bus, the encounter turned deadly within seconds.
“Within seconds of agents approaching the suspect, the suspect opened fire on our agents,” Romero said during a Thursday night news conference.
Four Lakewood police officers were struck by gunfire as the confrontation escalated. Responding officers returned fire, fatally shooting the suspect at the scene.
Emergency personnel rushed the wounded officers to nearby hospitals, but one could not be saved.
“We are very sorry to report that one of those agents has been pronounced dead of their injuries,” Romero announced.
The three surviving officers remained hospitalized following the attack. Police subsequently reported that their conditions were stable.
A civilian was also injured during the shooting and transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities had not immediately established how the civilian was wounded or disclosed the extent of those injuries.
The identities of the fallen officer, injured officers and deceased suspect were not immediately released.

Investigators are also examining whether the suspect was connected to a hit-and-run incident reported earlier Thursday, although authorities have not confirmed that connection.
The shooting occurred near a busy intersection and involved an RTD-contracted bus operating on Route 76.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as law enforcement vehicles and emergency responders descended on the area following the gunfire.
Authorities closed portions of the surrounding roadway while investigators began documenting evidence and examining the circumstances of the deadly confrontation.
Romero delivered an emotional message to the family of the officer who lost their life while responding to the call.
“We just want the family to know that we love them, that we’re here for them, and Lakewood Police Department is a family, and we will be here for each other.”

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, also issued a statement mourning the officer’s death and recognizing the dangers law enforcement personnel face while protecting their communities.
“Law enforcement put their lives on the line for our safety everyday and I am heartbroken to learn that a Lakewood Police Agent was killed in the line of duty this evening,” Polis wrote.
The governor extended his condolences to the officer’s loved ones and expressed concern for the surviving victims.
“My heart goes out to their family and friends,” he continued. “My thoughts are also with the three agents who are still receiving care at area hospitals, as well as the civilian who was wounded, and I wish them a full and speedy recovery. Thank you to law enforcement who run into danger to keep us safe and to protect our communities.”
Polis said the Colorado State Patrol was assisting local authorities and participating in a procession honoring the fallen officer.
The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team has taken responsibility for investigating the shooting, with assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
RTD officials confirmed the incident involved one of their contracted buses and said the transportation agency was cooperating with law enforcement.
“Our thoughts are with those affected directly by this incident,” RTD said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our customers, employees, and partners remain our highest priority.”
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine what led to the confrontation and whether the suspect had been involved in other criminal activity before the shooting.
The tragedy has left the Lakewood Police Department mourning one of its own while three fellow officers recover from their injuries.
As of Friday morning, one officer and the suspected gunman were dead, three officers were hospitalized in stable condition, and a civilian remained among those injured in the Thursday evening attack.
