A South Carolina Democrat state lawmaker has been arrested after allegedly threatening a family member of his political opponent with a gun.

The incident took place on Primary Day back in June, but State Rep. Michael Rivers wasn’t formally charged until this past Friday.

He is accused of pointing a handgun at a relative of his primary opponent, Shannon DeLocach, during an argument about political campaigning for his seat.

In case you are curious, Rivers ended up losing the primary to DeLocach.

Here’s his mugshot:

Now, Rep. Rivers is facing up to five years in prison, if convicted.

However, he is denying the allegations and has been released on bond for the time being.

The Post and Courier reported further:

Rivers, D-St. Helena Island, was booked into the Colleton County Detention Center Oct. 9 before being released on bond, according to court and jail records.

Rivers said he is innocent and that the accusation, which stems from an altercation at a Colleton County polling location during the June 9 primary, was from a political opponent.

He is alleged to have displayed a handgun at the Green Pond Community Center shortly before 2 p.m. on primary day. An incident report from the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office at the time didn’t provide any details on the alleged confrontation, according to The Post and Courier’s reporting at the time.

According to a State Law Enforcement Division affidavit attached to his arrest warrant, Rivers and another person, whose name is redacted, had a “brief verbal altercation” over the campaign for Rivers’ House District 121 seat.

That altercation led to Rivers pulling the gun from his car and pointing it at the unnamed victim, according to the report.

“I’m innocent, and feel this accusation levied by my political opponent represents politics at its worst,” Rivers, 67, said when reached by a reporter Oct. 9.

“I ask citizens to reserve judgment until this matter has been resolved in a court of law and I eagerly wait for that opportunity,” he added.
