Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York slammed socialists for being unrealistic about their platform’s goals and compared it to a type of fantasy land where “everybody has everything they need.”
“The Democratic Socialists of America seem to have the most energy in the Democratic Party,” York said on Fox News’s America Reports Thursday.
York cited a Fox News poll conducted July 17-20 about favorable views on socialism, the DSA, and capitalism. Among Democratic respondents, 59% favored the DSA and 52% favored socialism, compared with just 6% and 11% among Republicans, respectively.
“The poll results show that Democrats as a whole, not just democratic socialists, have a very favorable impression of socialism,” York said.
York highlighted the DSA’s new platform, which was released on July 14.
“Republicans would probably do well to point to the DSA platform, which was just released in the last couple weeks, and lays out the party’s goals, and they’re extraordinary,” York said.
The platform, called “Workers Deserve More,” includes eliminating the Senate, granting amnesty for all immigrants, defunding the Department of War, and replacing the Electoral College with a national popular vote for president.
“If we lived in a classless society and governed ourselves, we could freely build a world without war or poverty. We could build a world where no one suffers for their race, gender, or religion, and everyone is free, equal, and cared for. Building this world is the guiding star of our movement,” the platform said.
“It’s essentially a pie in the sky treatment in which everybody has everything they need, and it’s all paid for by these really, really rich people that they’re going to tax at a high level. Now, the idea of whether there are enough rich people in the country to finance something like that doesn’t show up in the platform, but that’s what they’re promising,” York said.
“These people are promising everything.”

York also noted that the basis of universal healthcare is going to knock out most people’s private insurance, and compared it to Obamacare’s temporary emergency COVID-19 subsidies that were going to “bankrupt the country.”
“This was not the way the system was designed to work,” York said.
