Seattle's Socialist Mayor Faces Business Revolt As Utopia Dreams Implode, Nearly Half Weigh Exit

Nearly half of Seattle businesses surveyed by the Downtown Seattle Association and Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce have seriously considered moving operations, jobs, or investment out of the city, putting pressure on socialist Mayor Katie Wilson in her first year in office.

All you need to know about socialist Wilson...

NEW: Socialist Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson says, “This is your city.”

The new findings show Wilson and her socialist comrades are failing to close the deficit and address persistent public-safety problems. On top of that, prioritizing left-wing policies has been an absolute disaster for businesses, as conditions are deteriorating and mounting concerns over public safety, high taxes, homelessness, regulatory barriers, and affordability have crushed confidence.

CRE Crisis

Disastrous. Some of the highrises in Seattle have seen 80%+ price drops since 2019. The city's political leaders were given an incredible tech boom and they squandered it. https://t.co/KrTeVZKen3

Exodus:

Most downtown Seattle businesses are GONE because of leftist rule.

Starbucks
Old Navy
The Loft
And many more GONE.

They left because of crime and homelessness & now most of downtown Seattle is VACANT.

Over the summer, the Chamber asked local businesses, via a questionnaire, how the city was working for them. More than 247 businesses responded, delivering a very awkward message for the socialist in charge:

Direction, outlook and cost of doing business

Socialism is very seductive because promises of free handouts, such as housing and more services, along with greater fairness and less inequality, are easy to sell to voters on the campaign trail but hard to deliver while managing a city's budget, ensuring public safety, and keeping the city functioning.

alt
Wilson's abrupt shift toward more police, expanded surveillance, spending cuts, and scaled-back pledges reflects how her socialist campaign promises were just that: promises.

alt
Socialists and reformist socialists are great at making campaign promises, but as activists, they're not effective managers. The resulting deterioration in Seattle's business environment shows just how that socialist framework is an unmitigated disaster, not just in Seattle but in many blue cities facing terminal decline.
