After the midterms, speculation has grown that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may be planning a presidential run for 2028.

On Friday, The Washington Post released a report that seemed to confirm the rumors.

Take a look:

NEWS: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is prepping a run for president in 2028, according to 3 ppl briefed on his plans. He's reached out to a national political consultant, his federal PAC sent out a fundraising text this week. https://t.co/fLtaMzlhge

Specifically, the report cited multiple unnamed sources who claimed that DeSantis was actively reaching out to people about running for president.

Read an excerpt from the original WaPo report:

Gov. Ron DeSantis is preparing to run for the GOP’s 2028 presidential nomination, according to three people briefed on his plans, after his home state of Florida was one of the few conservative bastions to survive the Democrats’ sweeping midterm victory.

“Florida’s walls not being breached by the blue wave gives DeSantis more credibility than nearly anyone in the opening days of the 2028 primary,” said Dan Eberhart, a longtime Republican donor and energy executive, who served as a surrogate for DeSantis’s unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign.

Already, DeSantis has reached out to at least one national political consultant about working on his campaign, according to one person close to him, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. His federal super PAC also sent out a text this week to try to raise money, another step that signaled an intention to run to those who know him.

Allies say the governor sees an opening politically after voters resoundingly rejected the Trump agenda this week. DeSantis called the elections a “close to an extinction-level event for Republicans.”

“It’s the political equivalent of a meteor strike that went all around the United States, blue states, red states, everything in between,” DeSantis said at a news conference in Tallahassee.

However, DeSantis has shut down the story as just another fake news narrative.

In a brutal response on X, DeSantis dismissed it as “another pathetic attempt to garner clicks”:

The Washington Post is fabricating this out of whole cloth. I have not reached out to anybody about running for anything. Just another pathetic attempt to garner clicks.

Using anonymous sources of course! pic.twitter.com/v9PtX6HgSj

Always take what you read from the establishment media with a grain of salt — especially if it comes from the Washington Post!

Interestingly, some folks are disappointed that DeSantis has shut down rumors of a potential presidential bid, at least for now.

Take a look at some of these responses:

@RonDeSantis This is one reporting we want to actually happen though…..

It looks like DeSantis is gaining support from patriots who want to see him on the 2028 ballot.

At the time of writing this article, DeSantis ranks third in Polymarket odds to become the next Republican presidential nominee.

He surged several points after the midterms.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis surges to 17% in the 2028 Republican presidential nomination odds, placing third behind JD Vance and Marco Rubio.
