Outgoing Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) continued his vindictive media tour on Tuesday by gleefully stating that he has Election Day saved on his phone in order to celebrate what he described as a guaranteed “whoop-ass” for the Republican Party.
In a recent interview with Politico’s Jonathan Martin, Tillis said, “When the bull**** becomes policy that’s problematic,” adding, “You get this November.” He further stated, “This thing that’s going to happen 20 days from now, which I have on my countdown clock is whoopass,” while discussing expected midterm outcomes.
Tillis made similar comments at an energy conference in Cary, North Carolina on October 15. “The election’s in 19 days. Twenty days from now, I’ll be reaching out to Republicans who aren’t crazy and try to figure out how we can recover from what I think are almost certain losses this election cycle,” the self-styled Republican gloated.
He also noted the need for candidates to “resonate with unaffiliated voters and have some separation from the president when you legitimately have a difference in opinion.” Earlier that month, Tillis told MS NOW that retaining the House was “almost statistically impossible” for Republicans while expressing more limited optimism about the Senate.
POLL: Should Immigrants Be Required To Speak English?
The Senator’s anti-GOP crusade began after he announced that he would not seek re-election in June 2025. His decision came just one day after voting against a procedural motion to advance President Donald Trump’s tax and spending package, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
In his retirement statement, Tillis stated that he had grown tired of navigating partisan gridlock in Washington and expressed a desire to spend time with his family. “As many of my colleagues have noticed over the last year, and at times even joked about, I haven’t exactly been excited about running for another term. That is true since the choice is between spending another six years navigating the political theatre and partisan gridlock in Washington or spending that time with the love of my life Susan, our two children, three beautiful grandchildren, and the rest of our extended family back home,” Tillis wrote.
It’s not a hard choice, and I will not be seeking re-election.” He added that he looked forward to “the pure freedom to call the balls and strikes as I see fit.” Trump had criticized the vote and threatened primary opposition, while the president later described the retirement announcement as “Great News!”
Tillis has since become increasingly anti-Trump and has repeatedly expressed a desire to see his own party, and by extension his voters, suffer. In his recently-released memoir, Tillis claimed that he cursed out President Trump and referred to the spending package — which funded the president’s immigration agenda, extended tax cuts and enshrined no tax on tips or overtime — as the “Big Beautiful Blunder.”
“We have chosen the proverbial chainsaw shed time and time again, kowtowing to the White House’s every demand, even when we know the end result is going to be a bloodbath,” the senator ranted. He also described confirming Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as the biggest regret of his career and has criticized other administration figures.
