President Trump Offers Canada Two Guarantees If It Becomes the 51st State

President Trump turned his familiar Canada-as-the-51st-state pitch into one of the biggest laughs of his Kansas rally Monday night.

His offer came with two unmistakably Canadian guarantees: the country could keep ice hockey, and “O Canada” could live on as a state anthem.

That is one way to handle the details.

President Trump arrived in Park City after landing at McConnell Air Force Base near Wichita, where he was greeted by a packed arena and a crowd ready for a full-strength campaign rally.

The White House framed the Kansas visit around the administration’s record on taxes, rural health care, private investment, agriculture and military installations.

Its pre-rally fact sheet said more than $735 million in emergency assistance had gone to nearly 53,000 Kansas farmers for the 2024 crop year. It also pointed to $222 million in first-year rural health funding and nearly $17 million for new diagnostic tools and remote patient monitoring.

The administration highlighted private projects as well, including a planned $3 billion data center campus in De Soto and an $895 million Merck Animal Health expansion. Those numbers gave Trump a policy record to sell before he turned to the night’s campaign business.

He used the trip to rally support for Republican Sen. Roger Marshall and other GOP candidates ahead of the midterm elections. The Canada line arrived between that political case and the crowd work that defines a Trump rally.

But between the policy points and campaign arguments, President Trump returned to one of his favorite ways of needling America’s northern neighbor.

According to the White House press pool, the president said he likes Canada’s national anthem before laying out the terms of his offer.

“I will let you keep ice hockey, and I will let you keep your O Canada,” Trump told the crowd.

The pool report places the line inside a speech that lasted roughly one hour and 37 minutes. Trump also announced an $8 billion harvest fuel relief program, talked about drug prices and illegal immigration, brought Marshall onstage, praised the senator’s family and discussed Kansas becoming more politically competitive.

The crowd had been chanting “Thank you, Trump” shortly before the Canada riff. The president joked with supporters as he worked through the moment, making the tone unmistakable.

The report also recorded his condolences for victims of the recent Stryker Sports Complex crash and noted that protesters had interrupted the rally earlier in the evening.

This was classic rally-stage Trump, not a formal diplomatic proposal. The joke still carried a serious message about how he sees the balance of power between Washington and Ottawa.

The line worked because Trump went straight for two symbols Canadians treat as sacred.

Hockey is more than a sport north of the border, and “O Canada” is more than ceremonial music. By promising to preserve both, Trump turned an annexation jab into a punchline Canadians understood instantly.

The humor also carried a familiar edge.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States holds enormous economic leverage over Canada. His administration has backed that message with real trade action, including a September proclamation excluding certain Canadian products from the U.S. market over what the White House described as discriminatory dairy policies.

The proclamation moved the affected products from an additional 50 percent tariff to an import ban beginning September 29. It cited Section 338 and Section 301 authorities and said the action was a response to continued discrimination against U.S. commerce.

That order is real policy with a stated effective date and product list. The rally line uses humor to reinforce the same pressure campaign without reading a trade docket from the stage.

His critics hear a threat. His supporters hear a president reminding Ottawa that the economic relationship is not nearly as balanced as Canadian leaders like to pretend.

The second clip captures the crowd reaction and the way Trump let the joke breathe.

He did not bury the premise under diplomatic language. He offered Canada statehood, hockey and its anthem in one clean shot, then moved on.

There is also a political calculation behind the humor. A rally line like this reinforces Trump’s America First message without turning a campaign speech into a trade seminar.

Everyone in the room knew the reference and exactly which country was being teased.

The president was clearly enjoying himself.

Canada’s government has shown no interest in statehood, and Monday night did not change that.

If negotiations ever reach the hockey-and-anthem stage, President Trump has already put his terms on the table.
