President Trump just gave Flávio Bolsonaro a very clear answer about his future in the United States.
Speaking to reporters Sunday morning, President Trump said he has no current plans to meet with the defeated Brazilian presidential candidate — but added that Bolsonaro can remain in America “as long as he wants.”
President Trump also said Bolsonaro was treated “very shabbily” and called Brazil’s election “a disgrace.”
Here is the President delivering that message in his own words:
That is a major public show of support at a moment when Brazil’s political class is demanding answers about Bolsonaro’s arrival in Florida.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the controversy one day earlier. He said the Trump administration did not arrange Bolsonaro’s departure from Brazil and was not directly involved in the movements that brought him to the United States.
The Associated Press reports that Rubio told reporters in Atlanta that Bolsonaro already held a visa and that President Trump made the decision to allow him into the country. Rubio also said he had spoken with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira during the G20 gathering and expected further contact with Brazilian officials in November.
The State Department published Rubio’s complete exchange with reporters, including questions about Brazil and Bolsonaro:
The distinction is important: President Trump has openly defended Bolsonaro and welcomed him to the United States, while Rubio says Washington did not engineer the trip that carried Bolsonaro out of Brazil.
Bolsonaro arrived in Miami on Wednesday after losing Brazil’s presidential runoff to leftist incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
CBS News reports that Bolsonaro traveled with his wife and two daughters through Argentina and Ecuador before landing in Florida. The outlet also notes that the Brazilian Supreme Court had ordered him to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports after the election, while Bolsonaro maintained that he left because his family was facing political persecution.
In his public letter, Bolsonaro rejected the idea that he had abandoned Brazil and thanked President Trump and the American government for receiving his family.
Here is the letter Bolsonaro released to the Brazilian people:
Bolsonaro has challenged the election result and described himself as a victim of political persecution. Lula’s government and Bolsonaro’s critics tell a much different story, pointing to pending corruption, money-laundering and tax-evasion investigations in Brazil.
None of those investigations has stopped President Trump from drawing a bright line around Bolsonaro’s right to remain in the United States.
The President did not promise a meeting, a formal political role or any new diplomatic action. What he did offer was unmistakable: a public defense of Bolsonaro, a denunciation of how he was treated, and an open-ended welcome on American soil.
Brazil’s left may hate it, but President Trump made his position plain.
