Players ‘intentionally trying to destroy’ WNBA as national anthem controversy erupts: Joe Concha

Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha criticized WNBA officials for failing to enforce the league’s national anthem policy after players walked off the court during two WNBA Finals games.

“This disrespect to our national anthem, and the insubordination, it’s going to continue to go unabated because league officials, they are petrified of their own players,” Concha said on FOX News’s Fox & Friends First Tuesday.

The controversy stems from a WNBA Finals matchup between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream, in which both teams walked off the court before the national anthem was played ahead of games on Oct. 17 and 19, according to OutKick.

“Players, coaches, and trainers are to stand and line up in a dignified posture along the sidelines or on the foul line during the playing of the National Anthem,” according to the WNBA rulebook.

Concha argued that the controversy has overshadowed the WNBA Finals, which are tied 1-1 after Atlanta won Game 2.

“It’s as if these players are intentionally trying to destroy this league, or at least tell a good chunk of the country, ‘You know what, don’t bother tuning in unless being insulted is your thing, and all these players believe that they have the leverage and the love of fans these days.”

Concha argued the players “don’t respect authority,” but they won’t face consequences because officials don’t want to “attract even more bad attention” for the league.

“They’re [players] going to continue to do it because no one’s going to step in and say, ‘OK, you broke the rule, here’s the fine, here’s some sort of reprimand,’” Concha said.

“If they hate the country so much, which they clearly do, then go play in Europe. Go play in Russia, go play in China, and see what kind of freedoms you have over there.”

The next WNBA Finals game is at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
