Hollywood is mourning the loss of veteran character actor Richard Riehle, best known for his hilarious portrayal of Tom Smykowski in the cult comedy “Office Space.” He was 78.
Riehle died Thursday, Oct. 15, in Los Angeles from natural causes, friends of the actor confirmed to TMZ.
The news marks the loss of another familiar face from some of Hollywood’s most recognizable productions, with Riehle building an extraordinary career that included more than 400 film and television credits.
While his name might not have appeared at the top of every movie poster, his performances made him a familiar presence on screens for decades.
For many fans, however, Riehle will always be remembered as the unforgettable Tom Smykowski in Mike Judge’s 1999 workplace comedy “Office Space.”
The film follows a group of disgruntled employees struggling through the mind-numbing routines of corporate life at the fictional technology company Initech.
Riehle portrayed Smykowski, a frustrated product manager whose increasingly desperate attempts to justify his job became some of the movie’s funniest moments.
His character’s troubles take an unexpected turn after he loses his job and subsequently survives a serious accident.
The resulting financial settlement allows Smykowski to pursue his unusual business dream, creating the infamous “Jump to Conclusions” mat.
The ridiculous invention, along with his character’s memorable workplace confrontations, helped cement Riehle’s place in comedy history.
Although “Office Space” was not a major box office success upon its original release, the movie developed an enormous following through home video and television broadcasts.
Its portrayal of corporate bureaucracy, irritating managers and miserable office employees resonated with audiences, eventually transforming the film into a beloved cult classic.
Riehle’s performance became an essential part of that legacy.
But his Hollywood career extended far beyond the fictional offices of Initech.
Over several decades, Riehle established himself as one of the entertainment industry’s busiest character actors, appearing in hundreds of productions across television and film.
His ability to portray eccentric, authoritative and comedic characters made him a dependable presence in projects spanning multiple genres.

He became particularly recognizable for playing characters who could deliver humor through awkward conversations, unusual personalities and perfectly timed reactions.
That versatility helped him maintain a steady acting career in an industry where long-term success can be difficult to achieve.
Riehle continued working well into his later years, appearing in productions even after reaching an age when many performers had already retired.
TMZ recalled catching up with the actor in Los Angeles in May 2018, shortly after he returned from filming the Lifetime holiday movie “A Very Nutty Christmas.”
The project featured actress Melissa Joan Hart and added another credit to Riehle’s extensive Hollywood résumé.
His continued involvement in the entertainment industry reflected a career built on persistence and a willingness to take on roles both large and small.
Unlike actors who become associated with one major franchise or starring role, Riehle carved out a lasting career by consistently delivering memorable supporting performances.
For “Office Space” fans, his portrayal of Smykowski remains one of the film’s defining comedic performances.
The character’s disastrous professional situation and wildly unconventional invention helped turn an otherwise ordinary office worker into one of the movie’s most recognizable personalities.
Riehle’s death closes a remarkable chapter in Hollywood character acting, leaving behind hundreds of performances and a lasting connection to one of America’s favorite workplace comedies.
