Washington Examiner economics columnist Tiana Lowe Doescher said she was shocked that former President Barack Obama is getting involved in Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) fraud investigation.
“I’m shocked, honestly, that Obama is besmirching his brand with this,” Doescher said Monday on Newsmax’s The Right Squad. “Because everyone in D.C. knows how fishy that family is. She gave birth to one man’s kid while she was married to the ‘bruhs-band.’”
Omar has been under various fraud investigations, with her most recent one questioning whether she should’ve been granted U.S. citizenship. After her Washington, D.C., home was raided on Oct. 12, Obama released a lengthy statement accusing the Trump administration of weaponizing the Department of Justice.
“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say,” Obama said. “But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.”
Doescher said the statement was hypocritical given Obama’s investigations into people like Carter Page for alleged Russian ties in 2016, as well as the 2010 investigation into Fox News reporter James Rosen for a government leak.
Omar’s fraud allegations began in January, when Trump said that the representative was under investigation over financial records discrepancies.
Omar’s past marriages have also been called into question. Vice President JD Vance said the DOJ was looking into whether Omar married her biological brother from Somalia so he could gain U.S. immigration privileges. Doescher said she didn’t know if the man Omar married, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, was the representative’s brother, only that they were never living together.
“Here is what has been proven, and I know this because I went to Minneapolis and I spent four days just going through traffic records, right,” Doescher said. “She was never living with the guy who did not father her children, that she was married to. She was always living with the father of her children.”

The DOJ is also looking at whether Omar committed fraud during her citizenship application. Omar’s birthdate was listed in public records as 1981, which the representative called a “clerical error,” before it was changed to 1982.
If her birth year was 1982 instead of 1981, she would have been granted automatic citizenship as a minor when her father naturalized. But if the original 1981 date is proven to be true, Omar would have been too old to be granted citizenship through her father. If so, Omar could face denaturalization.
