Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha blasted the media for dismissing the Trump administration’s investigation into Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola’s campaign, while criticizing Alaska Democrats’ alleged efforts to manipulate the Senate race.

“If you have to resort to something like this that is so blatantly obvious that they tried to cheat here. And the New York Times, a golf clap for them,” Concha said on Fox Business’s The Evening Edit on Thursday.

The controversy started when Republican candidate Dan J. Sullivan appeared on the state’s ranked choice ballot along with Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK).

Republicans grew concerned about the race after Dan. J. Sullivan garnered 2.5% of the total vote in the primaries, arguing that the two names could confuse voters and end up costing the GOP votes in the tight race against Peltola.

The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit on Oct. 23 to block the state’s election results if it becomes affected by “voter confusion.”

“Given the substantial likelihood that the inclusion of Daniel J. Sullivan will confuse or mislead voters looking to cast a vote for Senator Sullivan, and thus distort the will of Alaskan voters, there is a substantial likelihood that a certification of the election will reflect an electoral process that lacked integrity,” the lawsuit says.

Concha criticized the media for laughing off the investigation and accusing President Donald Trump of “interfering with the Alaska election by launching the investigation.”

The New York Times published a bombshell report on Wednesday, titled, “Inside Democrats’ Secret Effort to Stack Alaska’s Ballot.”

The report details actions allegedly taken by Peltola’s team to canvas the state for anyone named Dan Sullivan, in an effort to add them to the ballot to “dilute the incumbent’s support” and push Peltola to victory.

“In the summer of 2025, a staffer for Mary Peltola, the Alaska Democrat who was eyeing a run for Senate, received unusual instructions from top campaign aides: Find as many people named Dan Sullivan in Alaska as you can,” the report said.

“This is one of the biggest bombshells ever to hit days before a midterm, perhaps, ever,” Concha said.

“There’s so much evidence here, it’s not just smoke, it’s a five-alarm fire.”

Alaska’s ranked choice voting system allows the four candidates with the most votes from the August primary to advance to the general election, where voters can then rank the candidates.

Peltola’s campaign has “repeatedly denied any involvement in his candidacy,” despite text messages and documents detailing efforts by her campaign to recruit Dan J. Sullivan and encourage additional candidates to enter the race, according to the report.

“To do the work here, 12 sources, text messages, documents, this is some reporting that the Peltola campaign can’t just point and say, ‘Oh this is just a partisan hit job.’ I believe that Peltola herself said that, ‘Oh, this is just to sell newspapers.’ Oh, no it’s not. This is very real, and this is a big problem,” Concha said.

Concha argued voters cannot “listen to any Democrat lecture the American people or us again” about being the “only party that can save democracy” and protect the “sanctity of elections.”

“Who’s got egg on their face now?” Concha said.
