U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn.
U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., is hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Saturday.
Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, said the 53-year-old senator “started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game.”
“He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” she indicated.
“He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment. The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”
U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., said Sunday afternoon: “As someone who survived a near-fatal stroke, I understand all too well how much this impacts your life.
“My family is rooting for Chris and his family for a full and speedy recovery.”
Besides Fetterman, two other Democrats in the Senate have had strokes recently.
In 2022, Sens. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland and Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico suffered strokes, both of whom having recovered.
Apparently speculating on the cause of Murphy’s stroke, Nicolas Hulscher, an epidemiologist and administrator at the McCullough Foundation, shared an online post by the masked-up Democrat senator during the COVID pandemic as the lawmaker said at the time: “The vaccine safe, effective and it’s going to save lives. … I got the first of two doses today, and I encourage everyone in [Connecticut] to get vaccinated.”
“He is only 53,” Hulscher noted. “The aftermath continues … .”
Murphy’s stroke comes just days after he called plans by President Donald Trump to restart the war with Iran “insane.”
“Their plan is insane,” Murphy told the Middle East Institute. “It will lead to devastating escalation and the likely destruction of our commitment to the rule of law.”

Trump is reportedly planning to restart war with Iran after the election.
Some of us have been briefed on the war plan. And while I cannot disclose any details, I can say this: the plan is insane. It will not achieve objectives and will set off a new cycle of escalation. https://t.co/adWJfHVIok

Murphy is not up for re-election in this cycle, as his last victory came in 2024, and U.S. senators serve a six-year term.
