Nonprofit Defending Education is calling on the Department of Justice and the Department of Education to investigate Minnesota’s MyGender Dolls program.
University of Minnesota scholars are launching transgender dolls with removable genitalia, marketed by MyGenderDolls as being “for the professionals who support trans and gender diverse children.” The dolls are designed for children aged 4 to 10.
The dolls will be released sometime this year, although exact dates were not made available, according to the dolls’ website.
The website features photos of the dolls, including one that appears to be a boy wearing a dress with socks and loafers.
“This is a slap in the face to Minnesota families and taxpayers on two levels: this was developed by faculty members at the University of Minnesota through funding provided by Governor Tim Walz’s administration, and these Frankenstein dolls are going to be provided to children in elementary schools without parental notification or consent” Founder and President of Defending Education Nicole Neily said. “We hope that the Trump administration takes steps to prevent the state of Minnesota from ripping away children’s innocence in the name of ‘inclusion.’”
According to the New York Post, the project was funded by Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) and founded by the University of Minnesota’s Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health.
Walz was honored with the Eli Coleman Institute’s inaugural “Distinguished Sexual and Gender Health Champion Award” in 2023.
“The University of Minnesota Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health (ISGH) presented its inaugural Distinguished Sexual and Gender Health Champion Award to Governor Tim Walz,” the institute’s Instagram post said. “This award honors those who champion sexual and gender health in ways that have an impact at a particular historic moment when a champion is needed. Governor Walz received the award for his outstanding efforts in protecting sexual and reproductive healthcare and gender-affirming healthcare.”
The complaint states that parents within the organization’s network have not been notified about the program, and under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment, the complaint said, “federally funded educational institutions are prohibited from requiring students ‘to submit to a survey, analysis, or evaluation’ that elicits ‘information concerning’ the student’s ‘sex, behavior. or attitudes’ or any ‘mental or psychological problems’ the student might have.
The complaint also argues schools need to notify parents before the dolls are used.

Defending Education noted that the program appears to conflict with White House guidance on gender identity, including three executive orders (14168, 14187, and 14190).
The Washington Examiner contacted the Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health, the institute’s Sexual and Gender Health Clinic, and professor Dianne Berg (who was listed as the project’s lead), for comment. Berg’s automated response indicated she is on sabbatical until Oct. 19.
