Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s move to her third job within the Trump administration is just the latest shake-up in a week of spring cleaning at the State Department.
Noem, who was fired from Trump’s Cabinet in March, has been serving inside the State Department as a special envoy for “The Shield of the Americas” — a multinational coalition led by the U.S. states that blends military, political, and fiscal campaigns to combat terrorist organizations and cartels. Her status as a special envoy expired last month without renewal, and she has now been moved to another role.
“Kristi Noem’s envoy status expired last month and she is no longer in the role,” the State Department told media outlets on Friday. “She is now a senior advisor to Deputy Secretary [Christopher] Landau.”

Noem posted an image of a State Department release to social media on Friday, which stated, “the Special Envoy to the Shield of the Americas role was always a six-month appointment. Secretary Noem remains at the State Department as a Senior Advisor.”
Having parachuted into the adviser position, Noem did much better than two other State Department officials whose terminations were announced this week — neither of whom was relocated.
U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle was terminated from her position on Tuesday after allegations emerged that she solicited Eric Deters, a major donor to President Donald Trump, to pay off her personal debts ahead of confirmation in 2025.
According to leaked message transcripts first reported by the Wall Street Journal, Guilfoyle pleaded with Deter to pay off a $100,000 balance on her American Express account that she believed would compromise her chances of being confirmed. Guilfoyle, who was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr. for several years, promised Deter that she would be a powerful political ally within the Trump sphere if he helped her financially.
The president said his administration “didn’t like what we were reading” after the leaked messages emerged, and ultimately sacked her from her post.
Guilfoyle and her legal representation have suggested the messages were faked and accused Deter of attempting to blackmail her. That claim spurred Deter to announce he would sue the former ambassador for defamation.

“The texts are not fake,” Deters said in his lawsuit. “I have never been accused of or charged with blackmail.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Special Representative for Global Partnerships Paolo Zampolli was terminated from his position on Thursday after leaked emails showed him in a knock-down, drag-out email fight with a deputy secretary of state.
WATCHDOG GROUP SUES JARED KUSHNER TO BAR HIM FROM TRUMP VOLUNTEER ENVOY ROLE
Zampolli, a former modeling agent and friend of the president, created chaos under Landau with “unhinged emails” attacking fellow officials and “unauthorized and possibly unlawful ventures in commercial and economic matters.”
The political appointee told Politico on Thursday that he had “absolute zero surprise” about the termination and that “now it is time for the next chapter – back to business, building relationships and closing deals.”
