New York’s mayor isn’t the world police — someone should tell Zohran Mamdani

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is at it again.

In a recent interview, he announced he is actively exploring whether his administration can arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during an expected visit to New York for the U.N. General Assembly.

He cited an International Criminal Court warrant and claimed he’s consulting city lawyers on the matter.

This is not serious governance. It is dangerous political theater from a mayor who still refuses to accept the most basic limits of his office.

Mamdani is a local official. Full stop.

The constitutional order is unambiguous: Federal authority governs foreign affairs, diplomacy, and the treatment of foreign heads of state. Sitting heads of government enjoy diplomatic immunity under both U.S. law and long-standing international norms. The United States is not a party to the ICC and does not recognize its warrants as enforceable here. The U.N. Headquarters Agreement further protects visiting leaders.

No amount of lawyering by City Hall changes that. A mayor cannot override federal supremacy, diplomatic immunity, or Secret Service protections. Attempting to do so would be unlawful and immediately blocked.

Legal experts have already called it a nonstarter.

The audacity is the real story.

Mamdani’s comments reveal a man who views the mayoralty not as a job to run New York City, but as a personal platform to wage ideological foreign policy. While he fixates on grandstanding against Israel, actual New Yorkers deal with crime, crumbling infrastructure, homelessness, and strained city services.

This pattern is now unmistakable.

First, the unauthorized outreach to Iran’s U.N. ambassador.

Now, this public flirtation with arresting a foreign leader. In both cases, Mamdani’s office steps far outside its lane and forces higher levels of government to step in and enforce reality.

Enough.

ARREST MAMDANI, NOT NETANYAHU

Mayors manage potholes, policing, and budgets. They do not get to play prosecutor on the world stage or selectively nullify diplomatic protections. The federal government, not City Hall, decides who enters the country and under what conditions.

Mamdani should focus on the city he was elected to lead instead of manufacturing confrontations he has no authority to pursue. New York deserves a mayor who knows his role — and stays in it.
