New details have emerged after five men were arrested early Sunday near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England, a British-owned air base used by the U.S. Air Force.
The five suspects, none of whom have been identified as of this report, were arrested on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act and later further arrested on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act under section 5 of the Terrorism Act. Suspects held under the Terrorism Act can be detained for up to 14 days without charge.
Police have stated that at about 12:45 AM local time, officers responded to reports of three vehicles driving towards the base. An image geolocated by BBC Verify showed detained men about 350 meters from runway access at Crash Gate 6A.
Army explosive ordnance disposal specialists examined the three white vans inside a 400-meter cordon. A bomb-disposal robot was seen moving between the vehicles. Aerial footage showed the rear doors of two vans open, with large black barrels or containers scattered around them.
As of Sunday afternoon, police had not issued a confirmed inventory of the vans’ contents. The Daily Express reported that explosives or chemicals were found, though that has not been confirmed by Counter Terrorism Policing or Gloucestershire Police.

“We are in the early stages of an investigation, and five men remain in custody. As you would expect we are working closely with our partners to understand the circumstances of the incident. We continue to work with Gloucestershire Police to keep the community safe as we work to gather evidence from the scene,” Counter Terrorism Policing Senior National Coordinator Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans said.
“A 400m cordon has been put in place around the vehicles while the Army’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit conduct examinations. As a precaution, around 85 households have been evacuated whilst these examinations take place.”
While speaking with reporters outside Air Force One, President Donald Trump stated that intelligence relating to a planned attack had been obtained days or hours before. “It was fantastic. Working with Britain, it was an amazing job. We had them under investigation. They, they were looking to do big damage to our fort, and working with the British worked out great,” he said.
“It may have been Scotland Yard, I don’t know. We worked with a lot of them. We had them under view for a long time, and we got them. Thank you.”

A U.S. Air Force spokesperson declined to discuss force-protection measures and said personnel at RAF Fairford “remain vigilant.”
