First lady Melania Trump said Friday that she helped broker a temporary ceasefire on one front of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The limited break in fighting will begin Thursday, according to the White House, and will be limited to the region of Olenshky in southern Ukraine. Both Ukraine and Russia have agreed to halt operations in the area to allow humanitarian aid in and an evacuation of civilians.
“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water,” Melania Trump wrote in her statement. “The people of Oleshky have limited electricity, live amid mined roads, and endure regular military attacks. It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible.”
Melania Trump said the break in fighting was delivered through channels she has developed in her request to reunify Ukrainian children captured by Russia with their families. So far, the first lady has reunited more than 30 such families.
Furthermore, the first lady said that she had dispatched an “impartial American media association” to the region
“to accompany and document Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground throughout the process.”
