Justice Thomas Shares Personal Reason He’s Grateful To Sen. Cruz: ‘I Really Appreciate That’

Since they’re both pretty conservative and known as astute constitutional scholars, there’s plenty of common ground for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to flesh out a podcast.

But during a recent interview, Thomas shared with Cruz a more personal anecdote and offered his sincere thanks to the Texas Republican.

As The Hill reported:

“You’re one of the people who actually stands up, particularly at times when others seem to wither, and I appreciate it,” Thomas said in the opening minutes of Monday’s episode of “Verdict with Ted Cruz.”

“And more personally, when we, my wife and I, were under attack for obvious reasons, you and Mike Lee and some of the other friends would stand up,” he continued, referring to the Republican senator from Utah. “So I really appreciate that.”

Cruz responded, “That is very kind of you, and especially for you to observe that I stand up in the face of criticism and attacks, that is, that is powerful coming from you because you’re someone who knows what that’s like and has done so in a way that has been been world-changing.”

The exchange drew some attention on social media:

I wish we had 9 supreme Court justices with Clarence Thomas common sense

Standing up for someone when the political pressure is at its highest takes courage and conviction. Justice Clarence Thomas deserves to be treated with fairness and respect, and credit to Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee for standing by him.

Newsmax added these details:

The exchange came as Cruz prepares to release a biography of Justice Thomas, “Going Further: The Incomparable Clarence Thomas,” out this week from Sentinel, a conservative imprint of Penguin Random House.

Cruz, a former Supreme Court clerk and Texas solicitor general, conducted nine hours of interviews with Clarence Thomas for the book, which traces the justice’s life from segregation-era Georgia through poverty and experiences with racism to his eventual appointment to the court.

Here’s more from Cruz:

Clarence Thomas rarely gives interviews.

When I asked if he’d sit down with me, he said: “Ted, if you were a law professor, if you were anyone else, I would say no.”

Instead, he trusted me to tell his story—and sat down for more than nine hours of one-on-one interviews.… pic.twitter.com/BByLGyU1oG
